STOCKBRIDGE -- Ruth P. Barnes, 86, of Heaton Court, died Monday at the Interlaken Road home of her daughter, Judith Peyron.

Born in Stockbridge on Jan. 8, 1921, daughter of Oliver and Elizabeth Hogg Pixley, she graduated from the former Williams High School.

Mrs. Barnes was employed as an office supervisor for the Marian Helpers, Stockbridge branch, of the National Shrine of the Divine Mercy, retiring in 1985.

She enjoyed gardening, spending time outdoors, walks in the woods and observing wildlife.

She leaves two daughters, Sharon Manning of Williamstown and Judith Peyron of Stockbridge; a son, Thomas A. Barnes Jr. of Pocatello, Idaho; 16 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Elizabeth DeLand.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Ruth P. Barnes, who died Monday, Aug. 27, 2007, will be private. Capitanio Sr., George

LEE -- George S. Capitanio Sr., 72, of 3678 East, 400 North, Bringhurst, Ind., died Saturday at home.

Born in Lee on Feb. 20, 1935, son of Antonio and Theresa Maule Capitanio, he was educated in local schools.

Mr. Capitanio was a member of the NRA and had retired from Operating Engineers Local Union 103 in Kokomo, Ind.

He enjoyed amateur radio and woodworking.

His wife, Arlene A. Wade, whom he married Dec. 11, 1965, died Jan. 26, 2006.

He leaves three sons, George S. Capitanio Jr. of Rossville, Ind.; Brad A. Capitanio of Burlington, Ind., and George Samuel Capitanio of Stockbridge; four daughters, Hattie Werline of Brookston, Ind., Brenda Capitanio of Crawsfordsville, Ind., and Florence Pipa-Martin and Cindy M. Decker, both of Lee; five sisters, Catherine Arment, Helena Jurczyk, Rena White, Theresa Punch and Patricia Lagrant; three brothers, Mario Capitanio, Leo Capitanioand Anthony Capitanio; 18 grandchildren; and nine great-granchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for George S. Capitanio Sr., who died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2007, will be conducted Thursday at 11 a.m. at STOUT & SON FUNERAL HOME, 200 E. Main St. Russiaville, Ind., by Pastor Tim Polhman. Burial will follow in Asbury Cemetery in Carroll County. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Ferris, George

LEE -- George Ferris, 94, of Laurel Lake Assisted Living Facility died Monday at home. He had recently moved to Lee, and was the father of Charles J. Ferris of Monterey.

Born in Bronx, N.Y., on Sept. 21, 1912, son of Harry and Yetta Becker Feinstein, he was educated in New York City schools before graduating from Columbia College in 1933 and Columbia Dental School in 1936.

An Army veteran of World War II, he enlisted in 1942 and served with the Fifth Army in North Africa and Italy before his discharge as a captain in 1945.

He enjoyed bowling, gardening, playing cards and traveling. He served on medical and dental missions to Central America and the Caribbean, where he provided dental care to remote villagers who lacked access to regular health care services.

Mr. Ferris opened a dental practice in the Bronx before the war and a second practice in Long Island City, Queens, after completing his military service, retiring in 1988. He also worked as a dentist for the New York City school system during the 1960s and 1970s.

His wife, the former Jeanne Rosen, whom he married July 14, 1946, died on July 20, 1988.

Besides his son, he leaves another son, Roger A. Ferris of Austin, Texas, and a daughter, Jessica D. Feinbloom of New York City.

Gaetani, Mabel

NEW LEBANON, N.Y. -- Mabel Gaetani, 92, of Ocala, Fla., died Aug. 2 at the Timberridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Ocala, Fla. She was a longtime resident of New Lebanon.

Born in Rotterdam, N.Y., on Sept. 14, 1914, daughter of Homer B. and Mabel Whinnery Silvernail, she graduated from New Lebanon Central School.

Mrs. Gaetani and her husband owned and operated The Pillars restaurant in the early 1970s.

She was a lifetime member and past matron of the Order of Eastern Star.

Her husband, Thomas Gaetani, whom she married in 1962, died March 4, 1996.

She leaves her daughter, Taber Young of Wolcott, N.Y., and a granddaughter.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A graveside memorial for Mabel Gaetani, who died Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2007, will be held at 11 a.m. on Sept. 14 at the Cemetery of the Evergreens in New Lebanon, N.Y. Grieve, Alexander

ADAMS -- Alexander Whitman Grieve, 90, of 33 Highland Ave., died Monday at Williamstown Commons, where he had been a resident for several years. He was a well-known optometrist in the Berkshire area.

Born in Adams on June 22, 1917, son of Alexander W. and Davina Livingston Grieve, he was a 1938 graduate of the former Adams High School. He was also a 1941 graduate of the New England School of Optometry.

Mr. Grieve was an Army veteran, serving with the 111th Medical Service Command of the 15th Armored Division. He served from Aug. 26, 1942 until being honorably discharged in January 1946.

He operated an optometry practice on First Center Street in Adams and later relocated to Park Street, retiring in 1938.

His wife, the former Margaret E. Leary, whom he married June 6, 1924 in St. Thomas' Church, died on Dec. 24, 1995.

He leaves a granddaughter, Sarah G. Rogalin of Hipoint, N.C., and his grandson, Eric, of Hipoint.

A daughter, Kate Grieve, died in 2004.

Funeral Notice

HURLEY -- The funeral for Mary S. Hurley, who died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2007, will be Friday at 9 a.m. at ROCHE FUNERAL HOME, 120 Main St., Lenox, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. celebrated by Monsignor John J. Bonzagni of Lenox Dale. Burial will follow in St. Ann's Cemetery. Calling hours will be Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the funeral home. Mrs. Hurley was predeceased by a great-grandson, Garret DeVarennes, in 2002. She had lived under the care of her son Michael for 12 years prior to moving in with Mrs. Carnevale-Hurley. Mrs. Hurley will be remembered for her kind and gentle manner, her acceptance of people just the way they are, and for never judging anyone. She enjoyed feeding the birds in her yard and travelingwith her sons.

McLaughlin, Phyllis

BENNINGTON, Vt. -- Phyllis M. McLaughlin, 68, of Harwood Drive, died yesterday at home after a long battle with cancer.

Born in Ipswich, Vt., on July 1, 1939, daughter of Benjamin and Catherine Robitcheau Carpenter, she was educated in local schools.

Mrs. McLaughlin was employed as a secretary by Mount Anthony Union Middle School in Bennington for 15 years, retiring in 2001. Before that, she worked for a time in the kitchen and library of the public schools in West Lafayette, Ohio. After retiring, she worked part-time as a substitute teacher throughout the Southwestern Vermont Supervisory Union.

She was a member of the Women of the Moose and of Unit 13 American Legion Auxiliary, both in Bennington. She enjoyed working with children, dancing, gardening, reading, working on her computer, spending time at the beach and sightseeing trips to Europe.

She leaves two daughters, Dawn McLaughlin and Catherine Elliott, both of Bennington; a son, Scott McLaughlin of Bennington; three sisters, Barbara Guy of Hayward, Calif., Susan Doucette of Beverly, Mass. and Sharon Terreault, of Gloucester, Mass.; four brothers, Robert Carpenter of Portsmouth, N.H., Alfred Carpenter of Lynn, Mass., Donald Carpenter of Raleigh, N.C., and John Carpenter of Gloucester, Mass; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

McMillan, Robert A.

Robert McMillan, 56; was Marine veteran
NORTH ADAMS -- Robert A. McMillan, 56, of 190 East Quincy St. died Sunday at the North Adams Regional Hospital.

Born in Fort Worden, Wash. on June 13, 1951, son of Armand and Ellen Reid McMillan, he attended schools in Tennessee and Massachusetts.

A Marine veteran of the Vietnam War, he served as a lance corporal.

Mr. McMillan was employed as a cook at several local restaurants and worked most recently at the North Adams Cinema Corp.

He was a member of the Hoosac Valley Vietnam Association Chapter No. 54, where he served as a member of the color guard.

He and his wife, the former Rainelle Roswell, were married Jan. 13, 1979.

Besides his parents, of Albuquerque, N.M., and his wife, he leaves a son, Devin McMillan, , of Norfolk, Va.; a daughter, Victoria Myers of Hutto, Texas; two grandchildren; and two sisters, Elizabeth McMillan, of Boston and Katherine West of Albuquerque, N.M.

NEW LEBANON, N.Y. -- David E. Torra Sr., 47, of 1034 State Route 20 died Saturday at home of cancer.

Born in Pittsfield on Jan. 20, 1960, son of Louise R. Peters Torra and the late Carlo A. Torra, he lived most of his life in Lanesborough and was a 1978 graduate of Mount Greylock Regional High School.

He was employed as a chef at the Bridgeway Cafe in Cherry Plains, N.Y., for two years. Prior to that, he worked as a chef at the former Bonanza Restaurant for 10 years.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and cooking.

He was married to the former Bernadette Fitzpatrick.

Besides his mother, of Lanesborough, and his wife, he leaves two sons, David E. Torra Jr. of Pittsfield and Michael A. Torra of Stephentown, N.Y.; two brothers, Carlo A. Torra Jr. of Lanesborough and Paul J. Torra of Pittsfield; and four sisters, Patricia A. Montgomery of Virginia Beach, Va., Irene A. Killion of North Adams and Debra L. Riberdy and Dawn M. Torra, both of Manchester, N.H.

OXFORD / SOUTH YARMOUTH — Ernest E. Perron, 82, of Seaview Avenue, South Yarmouth and formerly of Oxford, died Saturday, Aug. 25, at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Gwen L. (Gero) Perron of South Yarmouth; three children, Robert A. Perron and his wife, Judith, of Sturbridge, Margaret A. Greene and her husband, Stephen, of New Ipswich, N.H., and Elizabeth J. Lowry and her husband, Stephen, of Melbourne, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was born and raised in Fitchburg, the son of the late Henry C. and Agnes M. (Ferguson) Perron. He lived in Oxford 20 years and New Hampshire 20 years, before moving to South Yarmouth 10 years ago.

He graduated with honors from Fitchburg High School in 1943.

Mr. Perron was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. Perron was a purchasing and production control manager for PVA/EPVA in Wilton, N.H., for 13 years, retiring in 1990. He worked in the greeting card business at various companies for over 40 years. In his retirement, he worked for H & R Block in Auburn and New Hampshire.

Mr. Perron was an avid gardener and a loyal Red Sox fan for many years. In his spare time, he enjoyed genealogy and bird-watching.

A funeral will be held at 9 a.m. Friday, Aug. 31, from Paradis Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oxford, followed by a Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Roch's Church, 332 Main St., Oxford. Military burial will follow at St. Roch's Cemetery, Oxford, with the Oxford Memorial Honor Guard participating. There are no calling hours.

SOUTHBRIDGE — Ada (Baglioni) Bonimelli, 95, of Southbridge, died Friday, Aug. 24, in the Radius Healthcare Center in Southbridge.

She was the wife of the late Attilio Bonimelli who died in 1992.

She is survived by her daughter, Irma A. Lataille of Southbridge; a brother, Bartolomeo Baglioni of Italy; a sister, Irise Masci of Italy; two grandsons, Michael Lataille of Las Vegas, Nev., and Dennis Lataille of Southbridge; a great-grandson, Christopher Lataille of Las Vegas, Nev.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was born in Mansfield, the daughter of the late Amedeo and Francesca (Cantiani) Baglioni. In 1915, she moved to Rome, Italy and returned to settle in Southbridge in 1947.

She worked at the American Optical Co. for five years, but was primarily a homemaker.

She was a member of St. Rita's Society and a member of the AARP.

She was an avid cook who enjoyed making all the Italian delicacies and pastries. She also traveled to Italy many times with her husband over the years.

Her funeral will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 28, from the Daniel T. Morrill Funeral Home, 130 Hamilton St., followed by a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, 263 Hamilton St. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery.

A calling hour will be held on Tuesday, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., prior to the Mass.

WEST BROOKFIELD — Pearl M. (Portier) Tuttle, 85, died Thursday, Aug. 23, in Warren.

Her husband, Charles R. Tuttle Sr. died in 1999.

She leaves two sons, Charles R. Tuttle Jr. of Warren and Ronald B. Tuttle of Fiskdale; two sisters, Irene Kennan of Brookfield and Jacqueline Gorman of Colorado Springs; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was born in West Warren, daughter of the late Wilfred A. and Rhea B. (Benoit) Portier.

She was a retired bank manager for Mascoma Savings Bank.

Funeral services will be at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours.

SOUTHBRIDGE — Roland H. "Bob" Boucher, 82, formerly of 121 Elm St., died Tuesday, Aug. 21, in the Radius Healthcare Center, Southbridge, after a long battle with Parkinson's disease.

He leaves his wife of 50 years, Margaret F. (Taylor) Boucher; two sisters, Jeannette L. Reim of Ostero, Fla. and Helen R. Duquette of Southbridge; four nieces, Lynn Reim, Jan DiGregorio, Patty Young, and Sandra Gail Whitin.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Leonard R. Boucher and Roger W. "Pete" Boucher, who died this past June.

He was born in Southbridge the son of Victor and Aldea (Racine) Boucher.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II serving in the Atlantic Theater, the Pacific Theatre and Guam.

Bob worked as a waiter and short-order cook in various restaurants in California before moving back to Southbridge many years ago. He also worked part time as a handyman and carpenter for many years.

He was a member of the Leonide J. Lemire post 6055 of the VFW in Southbridge.

Funeral services and burial will be private. There are no calling hours.

SOUTHBRIDGE/WORCESTER — Sophia (Malkowski) Krukowski, 103, died Tuesday, Aug. 21, at Radius Healthcare in Southbridge.

Her husband of 53 years, Peter Krukowski died in 1975.

She leaves two daughters Lillian Chalon of Murrietta, Calif. and Carol Young and her husband Fred of Southbridge; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two great--great-grandchildren; a sister, Katherine Charnetski of San Ramon, Calif. and several nephews and nieces.

She was predeceased by sisters Charlotte Milosh, Wanda Grendol, Ann Kreatz and Victoria Dunnelly.

She was born in Poland, the daughter of Walter and Marrianna Malkowski. She came to this country when she was 3 and lived in Worcester and Auburn most of her life before moving to Southbridge several years ago.

Sophia was a member of the White Eagles Club in Worcester and the Women's Auxiliary of the Polish World War I Veterans.

She was a stay at home wife and mother but also worked part time for FW Woolworth's in Worcester.

She crocheted, enjoyed reading, discussing politics and doing crossword puzzles.

A private service will be held in the Belanger-Bullard Funeral Home, 51 Marcy St., Southbridge. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery, Worcester.

PALMER — Earl J. Murray, 63, of Stimson Street, died Tuesday, Aug. 21, at Baystate Medical Center.

Born Nov. 20, 1943, he was the son of the late John H. and Wilda (Gonyea) Murray. Earl was a lifelong resident of Palmer.

He was a graduate of Palmer High School.

He is survived by two daughters, Irene Nareau and her husband Alan of Palmer and Susan Murray-Blake and her husband Joel of Charlton. He also leaves a sister, Lorraine Monat of Davenport, Fla.; four grandchildren, Eric and Andrew Nareau, Dale and Jeremy Blake and two great-grandchildren, Brooke and Kaylei Nareau.

A Service of Remembrance will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 25 at the Beers & Story Palmer Funeral Home. Calling hours will be held from 4-7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24

WEBSTER — Stasia T. (Kondek) Balkurna, 97, formerly of Slater Street, died Monday, Aug. 20, in Lanessa Extended Care Facility.

Her husband of 31 years, John J. Balkurna, died in 1964.

She leaves a son, John Balkurna and his wife Betty of Dudley; three grandchildren, Tina Nolin, Gary Gemme and Andrea Hagg; a great-grandson Justin; four sisters, Josephine Grzych and Charlotte Carpick, both of Dudley, Joanne Lesniewski of Southbridge and Genevieve Pioppi of Sturbridge; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her five brothers, Charles, Walter, John and Louis Kondek, all of Webster, and Henry Kondek of Blackstone.

She was born in Webster, the oldest daughter of Stanley and Frances (Nycek) Kondek, and lived on Sunnyside Road in Dudley for 52 years, moving to Webster in 1978.

Mrs. Balkurna was a weaver at Cluett-Peabody Mills in North Grosvenordale, Conn., for 28 years before she retired in 1977.

She was a member of St. Joseph Basilica and its Holy Rosary Sodality, Sacred Heart Society and Saint Anne Society.

She enjoyed playing bingo and cards..

The funeral will be held Friday, Aug. 24, from the Sitkowski & Malboeuf Funeral Home, 340 School St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph Basilica, 53 Whitcomb St. Burial will be private.

A calling period will be held from 8:15 -9:15 a.m. Friday, Aug. 24, in the funeral home.

ONECO, Conn. — Gerard "Jerry" C. LaRiviere, 36, of Newport Road, died Monday, Aug. 20 in Killingly.

He was born in Southbridge, Mass., on January 5, 1971, son of Jake LaRiviere of Georgia and Judith (Lacoste) Curtis of New York.

He was the beloved husband of Dawn (Frechette) LaRiviere. They were married Oct. 2, 1999. She survives him.

Besides his parents and his wife, he is survived by his brother, Jason Curtis of Saranac Lake, N.Y.; his sister, Patty Hebert of Saranac Lake, N.Y. and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his maternal grandfather, Charles Lacoste of Southbridge, Mass.. and his mother and father-in-law, Kathleen and Joseph Chartier of Danielson.

He attended local schools in Saranac Lake, N.Y.

Mr. LaRiviere was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He worked for over 12 years for Ron Morin Contractor in Putnam, Conn.

He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman who enjoyed playing horseshoes.

He was loved and will be missed by all who knew him, especially his wife Dawn.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25 in Tillinghast Funeral Home, 433 Main St., Danielson. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

HUMBLE, Texas — Gerald E. Goulet passed away peacefully on Monday, Aug, 20.

He was born Feb. 27, 1910 in Holyoke. He was preceded in death by his parents. Joseph and Alphonsine (Gagnon) Goulet, his brothers, Eugene Goulet, Rev. Albert P. Goulet, and Brother Ernest Goulet.

Gerald is survived by his wife of 69 years, Iris (St. George) Goulet; his daughters, Theresa Robertson and husband Bruce of Storrs, Conn., Pauline Beck and husband John of Humble, Texas, with whom he made his residence. He will be missed by his grandchildren, Eric Robertson of Virginia, Rebecca Powell and Aaron Banks of Texas, Angela Perry of Oklahoma; three step-grandchildren, Jennifer Kechemir, John Beck and Laura McKeand; numerous great-grandchildren and three nieces.

Prior to moving to Texas in 2000, he resided in Southbridge, where he worked at the American Optical Co. for 32 years. He worked as a security guard at the Fair for eight years.

He was a member of the League du Sacre Coeur at Sacred Heart Church, and the Senior Center. He was a communicant at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Texas.

Gerald enjoyed bowling for the WAA league at the American Optical Company and the Senior Citizen League. He belonged to the Royal Travelers Club and he and his wife enjoyed traveling throughout the United States.

He will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband and father, a man whose work ethic was greatly admired and appreciated by his family. Special thanks to family and friends who made his last years in Texas so memorable.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27 in New Notre Dame Cemetery, Southbridge.

WORCESTER — Annis R. (LaRoche) Rivers, 61, of 8 Auburn St., died Saturday, Aug. 18 in University Commons after a battle with cancer.

She leaves her daughter, Dawn Lord and her husband, Sean, of Southbridge, a stepdaughter, Lana Laczka of Upton, a stepson, Kenneth Rivers, of Northbridge, a sister, Rita Lefevre of Plainfield, Conn., and her good friend. John Brown with whom she lived. She also leaves step-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, cousins, many close friends and her birth mother, Ernestine May Robbins of Danielson, Conn.

She was predeceased by her former husband George E. Rivers.

She was born in New London, Conn., and was the adopted daughter of Pierre and Rosilda (Tellier) LaRoche.

She was a 1964 graduate of Killingly High School in Danielson, Conn.

Annis worked at Bonworth Clothing Outlet.

She was a longtime member of Our Lady of Fatima Church where she was a member of the Women's Guild and a volunteer bingo worker.

Memorial Services will be held from 5 - 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24 with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. in Callahan & Fay Brothers Funeral Home, 61 Myrtle St. Burial will be private.
