Mullin, Judith Yvonne

Judith Yvonne Mullin SCITUATE Judith Yvonne (Settino) Mullin, of Scituate, November 20, 2008 age 63. Judith passed away peacefully surrounded by her entire family. She was diagnosed in 2004 with ALS (Lou Gehrigs disease). Even though the disease had robbed her of her ability to walk, talk, and even breathe on her own she continued to light up a room with her smile. Born in Boston and raised in Braintree, she attended Braintree schools before receiving a degree from Chandler Business School of Boston. Beloved wife of 43 years to Edward. Loving mother of Michael and his wife Ang of Boston, Julie Mullin Smith and her husband Jonathan of Quincy, Victoria Mullin Gorelik and her husband Eugene of London, Matthew and his girlfriend Brooke Motta of S. Boston. Grandmother of Cassidy Judith. Daughter of Mary (Maloney) Hurst of Florida and the late Michael Settino. Sister of Joanne Dee of Needham and Michael Settino of Brewster. Raising four children never deterred Judy from contributing to her church, St. Mary of the Nativity in Scituate, as well as to her community. She was the director of St. Marys childrens choir for 18 years during which she encouraged children with disabilities to participate. In addition to the choir she began the annual Christmas pageant which she ran for 20 years and which is still running today. Judith also taught religious education, became the parish Confirmation Coordinator, and typed the parish bulletin in her spare time. In recognition of her contributions to her parish she received the Woman of the Year Award in 2006 from the Archdiocese of Boston for her services to youth. In the Scituate Community she was a Little League Coach. Her first years were met with tension as she insisted that every player, no matter what their skill level, be given a chance to play encouraging children with disabilities to join her team. It was not until her team won the little league championship that her ideas were embraced. Incidentally her star pitcher that year had only limited use of one of his arms. After many years of continued coaching success and several championship teams she took a place on the Board of Directors of the Scituate Little League; this involvement encompassed more than 10 years. In recognition of her contributions to the Little League, and the youth of Scituate Judy was nominated for and won the award for Woman of the Year in amateur baseball for the state of Massachusetts. Moving on from baseball Judith became the Scituate High School girls tennis coach for nine years. As usual she continued her legacy of success and Scituates team was a perennial league leader and finalist in the state tournament. In addition to being a coach she served as a member of the Scituate Beautification Committee, and was a willing donator of her time to anyone in need of a ride to a medical appointment, a helping hand, or simply a sympathetic ear to listen. Personally she loved the thrill of competition and played top level competitive tennis at Scituate Tennis Club and won several league championships. While tennis was her first love, she discovered golf and found herself on the traveling team of Scituate Country Club and later the Hatherly Country Club. As usual she excelled and soon had more than her share of trophies, as well as a hole in one. When Judith was diagnosed with ALS her family and friends began the annual Judys Walk for Hope benefiting continued ALS research. This year in its fourth and largest year to date the walk had well over 200 participants. In its four years the event has raised over 160,000 for ALS research and continued strides toward finding a cure, a true testament to Judys far reaching friendships and contributions to the community that she loved. May she rest in peace, she has earned it, Judy you will surely be missed. Funeral from the Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home, 382 First Parish Rd, Scituate on Monday, November 24 at 9 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary of the Nativity Church at 10 a.m. Visiting hours Sunday from 2-6PM. Interment will be private on a later date. At the familys request, in lieu of flowers donations in Judiths name can be made to Judys Walk for Hope via
