Ames, Thomas H. W.

WALPOLE Thomas H. W. Arpi Ames, born August 28, 1914 in Boston, son of the late Ralph E. and Ada Maud (White) Ames. He was the youngest of six, brother to the late Frederick and Ralph Ames, Phyllis Cunningham, Helen Becker and Edith Vosburgh. He was the devoted husband of the late Hazel A. (Taylor) and father of Thomas R. of Dennisport, MA and Cynthia A. Gardiner of Walpole, formerly of Westwood. Thomas had two grandchildren, Jennifer L. Rutan of Carlsbad, CA and Bradford T. Rutan and his wife Jeanie of Walpole, MA. He was affectionately called Arpi by all. Thomas served from 1943 to 1946 as a Lieutenant in the Merchant Marine Service and sailed both the Atlantic and Pacific in WWII. Thomas and his wife lived in Quincy, MA most of their lives. He loved to dance and was active in the Wollaston Neighborhood Club. He was a member of the Manet (Delta) Lodge of Masons. He was an avid skier and a founding member of the Old Colony Ski Club and had been a member of the Mogul Meister Ski Club since 1960. He worked for Dow Corning Corp. as Eastern Region Manager of their silicone products division. Upon retiring to Yarmouth Port, MA in 1980, he became an active member of the Bass River Golf Club. He also had a small ocean cottage in Dennisport where he loved to spend his summers. A wake will be held at the Thomas F. Alexander & Sons Funeral Home, 45 Common Street in Walpole, MA on Sunday, June 21st from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Monday, June 22nd at 10:00 a.m. at The First Parish of Westwood United Church, 340 Clapboardtree Street, Westwood, MA. Burial at Bourne National Cemetery will be held at a later date.

She managed the Conway office in Hanson for several years before her retirement in 2008. She was the adored mother of Rosemary Betzold-Couzens of New York, Linda Betzold-Rivas of California, the late H. John Betzold III, Janet Linder of New York, and Kathleen Batista of Southborough, the loving grandmother of twelve grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Frederick, Edward, and Ralph Cavicchi. Betzold, Barbara M.

HALIFAX Barbara M. (Cavicchi) Betzold, 80, formerly of Whitman, died Wednesday June 17th, after a long illness. She was the beloved wife of the late Attorney Harold J. Betzold, Jr. Born in Brockton and raised in Whitman, where she spent most of her life before moving to Halifax 13 years ago. She was the beloved daughter of the late Armando and Benilde (Ferrari) Cavicchi. She was a graduate of Whitman High Class of 1946. In her younger years she worked at the family business F. Cavicchi and Co., a fruit and produce retail business. She then graduated from Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida with a BA in Psychology, where she met her husband Harold. Barbara was a well known realtor in the South Shore area and worked for Jack Conway & Co. for more than 30 years. She managed the Conway office in Hanson for several years before her retirement in 2008. She was an active citizen of the Whitman community and served on the board of two local banks. She was a former member of the Whitman Mothers Club and a former communicant of the Holy Ghost Church of Whitman, where she taught CCD for many years. She donated many hours to, and was a very successful fund raiser for Cystic Fibrosis. Her grandchildren were a joy to her and a very important part of her life. Barbaras gift was her kindness to others, hard work and passion for life , all of which she shared with so many family, friends and fellow co-workers. She will be lovingly remembered by her many friends, nieces, nephews and fellow realtors. Blecharczyk, Ludwik P.

NEW BEDFORD —Ludwik P. Blecharczyk, 90, passed away on June 17th, 2009, at New Bedford Health Care Center after months of declining health. Ludwik was born April 3, 1919, to the late Frank and Mary (Szafran) Blecharczyk. He was the husband of Valentine (Turbak) Blecharczyk, a lifelong resident of New Bedford, and a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. Mr. Blecharczyk was a graduate of New Bedford High School (1937) and New Bedford Textile School (1939). He was employed in the machinist trades at Browne & Sharpe in Providence, the U.S. Navy Arsenal in Watertown, both the Nashawena and the Hoosac Mills in New Bedford, and for 25 years at the Acushnet Company until his retirement in 1982. He served as Machinist Mate 2nd Class during WWII in the U.S. Navy in the South West Pacific and was also a Korean War Veteran. Mr. Blecharczyk was a member of the Polish and American World War Veterans Association, the VFW Freetown Memorial Post #6643, and the P.N.A. Lodge 536. He continued to enjoy his passion for metal working in retirement and was skilled at designing and fabricating many repair parts for the households of family and friends. He enjoyed his grandchildren and his machine shop. Blessed with a keen intellect, natural curiosity and generosity to others, Mr. Blecharczyk will be greatly missed by all those who knew him. Ludwik is survived by his loving wife, Valentine of 59 years who devoted many years as a full time caretaker to her husband's late life needs; a son, Paul Blecharczyk and his wife, Sheila of West Roxbury, MA; 3 daughters, Janice Dacey and her husband, Charles of North Dartmouth, MA, Nancie Wood and her husband, Henry of Raleigh, NC, and Susan Shaw and her husband, Jay of San Diego, CA; 5 grandchildren, Nathan and Justin Blecharczyk, Christopher and Erin Dacey, and Lucas Shaw; and a brother, Tadeusz Blecharczyk of North Dartmouth. He was the brother of the late Walter Blecharczyk. At his request, calling hours are omitted and his funeral will be private. WEYMOUTH Gertrude C. (McClellan) Dawe, a retired long distance operator for AT&T, died on Thursday at Alliance Health Care in Braintree. She was 85 years of age. Born raised and educated in Roxbury, she was a graduate of Holy Trinity High School and had lived in South Weymouth since 1990. She also wintered in Ft. Lauderdale for many years. Gertrude was a member of the Pioneers of America and had retired in 1965 after 23 years with AT&T. She was active in the St. Vincent DePaul Society at both the St. Bridgets Church in Abington and St. David Church in FL. Gertrude had a wonderful sense of humor that carried her through life. She loved animals, shopping, yard sales, playing and volunteering at bingo. Beloved wife of the late George E. Dawe, she is survived by her daughter Adrianne C. Nichols of Hopedale, 3 grandchildren Sara, Michael and Jake, 1 great-granddaughter, her beloved friend Patricia R. DeSimone, Bertha Lorraine

BAR HARBOR, ME Bertha Lorraine (Blood) DeSimone, 81, died peacefully in her home in Bar Harbor, Maine on June 17. She was born in Boston on April 12, 1928, the daughter of James E. and Bertha (Feeley) Blood. She grew up in Jamaica Plain with her two brothers and eight sisters. Mrs. DeSimone served in the Women's Army Corps in St. Louis in the early 1950's. She married the late Andrew A. DeSimone in 1956 and raised her two sons in Braintree, where she owned Granite Park Realty with her sister, Norma. She moved to Chatham in 1987 and operated DeSimone's Italian Villa with her husband, with help from her sisters Patty and Thelma. Mrs. DeSimone treasured her family get togethers, where food, cards, and laughs were always in abundance. She enjoyed bridge parties, golf, and the Red Sox, where she relived her days as a pitcher for the Army softball team. She loved crossing the Sagamore Bridge to Cape Cod and enjoyed hibachi cooking on Monomoy Island with her close friend, Helen Carey (traveling home in the fog on more than one occasion). After moving to Methuen, MA, she worked in the food industry with her dear friend, Shirley Cappello, and never turned down a chance to visit the slots with her many friends from Park Gardens. She helped in her family's business in Maine, starting in 1978, and later returned to Bar Harbor in 2005 to live. Mrs. DeSimone was cared for in her last year by her wonderful companion, and adopted daughter, Beth Maglalang and her Aunt Lille. She is survived by her son, James, of New York City, and his partner, Danny, her son Robert, of Bar Harbor, Maine, and his wife, Olie; her sisters, Eileen Chitro, of Waterford, CT, Barbara King, of Braintree, MA, and her husband, Bob, Jeanne Swensen, of Nampa, ID, and her husband, Ralph, and her sister-in-law, Louise Blood, of Harwich, MA, and sister-In-law, Mary Baldassare, of Boston, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews, including Marianne, Shelley, Patty, Pammy, Dana, Bobby, Nancy, Judy, Donald, Karen, Carol, Jo-An, and Stefano, and dear friend, Shirley Cappello, of Methuen, MA. She is also survived by her dialysis caregivers Vicki Hart, Amy King, and all of the caring folks at Eastem Maine Dialysis Center, her physician, Lee Haynes, and assistant, Necie, and her visiting nurse, Emma Lansing. She was predeceased by her sisters, Marian Green, Thelma Phillips, Dorothy Carabbio, Norma Faenza, Patricia Reagan; and her brothers, James, and Arthur, and her dear friends Helen Carey and Julie Lindsay. She loved animals and sorely missed her family pets, Tank and Trixie, and is survived by Cubbie the dog and Nibble the cat, who, despite her best efforts, never quite saw eye to eye. Elouise G. (Sherman) Carlson of Raynham, formerly of Easton, passed away on Monday June 15, 2009 at the South East Rehabilitation Center in Easton after a period of failing health. She was 96. She was born in New Bedford, she grew up in Easton and graduated from Oliver Ames High School in 1929.  She graduated from Bridgewater State College where she earned a Master's Degree. She taught most of her career in Easton Public Schools holding positions as Principal and reading supervision. She went back to classroom instructor where she enjoyed working with 2nd grade children.  She moved to Raynham in 1984 where she enjoyed Bingo, shopping and going to lunch with her friends at Pine Hill Estates. She was the Daughter of the Late Walter E. and Ruth (Marble) Sherman. The devoted wife of the late Carl G.Carlson. Loving mother of Carl G. Carlson of Middleboro, David S. Carlson of Hudson, FL, the late John W. Carlson of NH. Sister of Dorothy Wood of Athens, GA, Elizabeth Palmer of TX, and the late Edward  A."Bud" Sherman of Bridgewater. CARR, F. James, Jr. Died at Liberty Commons in Chatham on Wednesday, June 10 after a long illness. He was born on August 14, 1927 in Quincy, MA to F. James Carr and Jessie (French) Carr. He grew up and attended schools in Bronxville NY, Boston and Dennis MA. He was a Merchant Marine and Army veteran of WWII and Korea. He worked as an analyst and stockbroker for Blyth, Eastman Dillon, and in the Bursar's office at NYU in New York. He moved to Plympton, MA in 1979 where he began a vineyard and Christmas tree farm, and in 1986 he moved to Dennis, Cape Cod. An avid historian, genealogist, photographer and researcher, his varied interests included clipper ships, Cape Cod and Dennis history, veterans' service, post card and autograph collecting. He was an expert on ships built at the Shiverick Shipyard in Dennis and their sea captains. He was an archivist for the Cape Cod Playhouse, and he contributed his time and expertise to the Dennis and Yarmouth Historical Societies and Dennis Public Libraries. Copies of his photographs and post cards may be found in several publications. A lover of animals, he often cared for stray and abandoned dogs and cats in addition to his own pets. Memberships include Mayflower Society, Korean Veterans Association and the Cape Cod Postcard collectors Assoc. Brother of the late Leonard Carr and Rachel (Carr) White, he is survived by his sister, Janet (Carr) Bayley of Swampscott, MA and nine nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Friday June 26 at 10 a.m. in the Dennis Union Church, Dennis. DONOVAN, Fredrick J. Of Andover, died at the Sawtelle Family Hospice House, Reading, on June 17, after a long struggle with cancer. He was the beloved husband of Mary (Watts) Donovan. Mr. Donovan was born on June 8, 1933, in Lewiston, Maine, the son of the late Leo and Elizabeth D. (Spencer) Donovan. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and taught English for 40 years at Chelmsford High School. Besides his wife Mary, he was the devoted brother of Elizabeth Robinson of Norwell and Diana Estes and Leonis Donovan of South Harpswell, Maine. He is survived by several nieces and nephews. Nancyann Gilbert SCITUATE Nancyann Gilbert, RN, known affectionately as G.G. (Grandma Gilbert) by the grandchildren died at the age of 74 years on June 17, 2009, after a long and courageous battle with leukemia. Nancyann was born in Germantown, PA and was a resident of North Scituate, MA for more than 47 years. She graduated as a RN from Bryn Mawr School of Nursing in 1955, and went on to become a surgical OR nurse. She later received a M.S. in Psychology from Emmanuel College in 1978. She went on to be a Case Manager Nurse at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, Boston, MA, where she retired after 13 years. She loved Scituate and was very involved in the community. She was a soprano singer in the St Francis Cabrini Choir for many years, but her favorite job was Girl Scout Leader for several years. Her adventuresome and invincible spirit ran tandem with her activities of choice scuba diving, snowshoeing, traveling and reading. Beloved wife of John W. Grace J. McNamara passed away peacefully in Stuart, FL on June 13, 2009. Born in Taunton, MA, on May 11, 1913, she became a secretary and office manager for the Harrison George Insurance Agency.  She retired to Florida. She was predeceased by siblings Louise McNamara Irving, J. Stewart McNamara, Barbara McNamara Podworny, Ray McNamara, and Kathy McNamara Secher.  She was also predeceased by a beloved young niece LoriLee Secher. She is survived by her loving remaining nieces and nephews Donna Irving Armon, Bob Irving, Bill Irving, Bruce McNamara, Jan Podworny Sorokowski, Carol Podworny Knapp, Paul McNamara, Sandy Secher Perullo, Bill Secher, Kathy Secher and Gary Secher. She will be missed by all, including her many grand nieces and grand nephews and all their children and grandchildren. A Funeral Mass was held at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Stuart, FL.  Her remains will be inurned at the family plot in St, Joseph Cemetery in Taunton.

Russell F. Henry, 77, of Shrewsbury, was stricken ill at his home on Thursday, June 28th. He was the husband of Loretta M. (Auren) Henry and they would have celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary on June 30, 2009. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his four sons: Stephen D. Henry and his wife, Charlene of Westborough, Robert F. Henry of Brookfield, David A. Henry of Worcester, Darryl R. Henry of Shrewsbury; a brother, Kendall Henry of Fort Worth, Texas; 10 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren whom he was very proud of. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and many close friends. Russell was born in Shrewsbury on May 12, 1932, son of the late Raymond Franklin and Annie Josephine (Gifford) Henry. He graduated from Major Beal High School and later served his country proudly in the Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a helicopter mechanic with the 3rd Infantry Division. Russell was a mechanic all of his life, having worked at F&HTransportation and Saltus Press, both in Worcester. He had a passion for antique cars, in which he was the proud owner of a 1930 Model A and a 1939 Dodge. His other interests include: country music, square dancing with the double K Square Dancing Club of Rochdale, and supporting youth activities in his community. He was a member of the Church of the Nativity in Northborough; the Old Car Club of Shrewsbury; the Model A Car Club of Central MA: he was on the Advisory Board of NEADS in Princeton; member of the Order of the Elks in Auburn; Past Boy Scout Leader of Troop 29 in Shrewsbury; Charter member of the Charles J. Murphy VFW in Shrewsbury; member of the American Legion Picard Post in Northborough; Charter member of the Friendly Riders' Motorcycle Club in Worcester; Teen Advisor for Gene's Teens of Rochdale and a member of the Shrewsbury Senior Center where he drove their bus many times. The Henry family would like to thank the Shrewsbury Fire, Police and EMS departments for their outstanding support and services that was shown to their family. Born on the island of Fayal, Azores, Mrs. Pereira was the daughter of the late Henrique D. and Ana G. (Santa) Laranjo. She was raised and educated in Portugal before moving the United States on Feb. 9, 1962. A communicant of St. Anthony Church, Mrs. Pereira was proud to be a breast cancer survivor. Besides her husband, she leaves 2 sons, Eduardo H. Pereira and Steven J. Pereira, both of Taunton; 2 daughters, Ana M. Roberts of Berkley and Nancy L. Bombard of Taunton; a brother, Manuel D. Sister of Marion O'Neill of Hilton Head, SC, Marilyn Fitzgerald of Norwell, Paul O'Neill of Eliot, ME, and the late Elizabeth Bund. Also lovingly survived by 8 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. A member of the "Greatest Generation", Audrey O'Neill Pickett grew up during the Depression and WWII. A 1939 graduate of North Quincy High School, she was very outgoing and athletic. She was a cheerleader for the football team, played many sports, was a powerful swimmer and played a role in the Senior Class Play. After high school she studied drama at Emerson College, worked on the Yankee Clipper train to New York, and at the Army Exchange. In 1942 she became one of the first stewardesses for Northeast Airlines and was part of their marketing campaign. She married Bob Pickett of Hingham in 1943. Bob worked in the Aerospace Industry for over 40 years in CT, NY, and MA. Audrey was a full time mother, raising her 3 children. She and her husband Bob lived in Hingham for over 40 years until Bob passed away in 2003. During their 60 years of marriage, they always cherished family gatherings, trips with their children, visits to the Cape, and various sailing adventures. In later years, Audrey loved to tell her grandchildren and great grandchildren stories about her family when she was growing up, stories told with great love and warmth. He was the son of the late James J. Reilly and Mary King Reilly. Mr. Reilly graduated from East Providence High School, class of 1954. He would marry Barbara Binet on December 27, 1986 in Southborough, MA at the Pilgrim Church. They were married for 22 years. Together they enjoyed homes in Northboro, Boylston and Quincy, MA. Before retiring to Keene, NH. He is survived by his wife Barbara. Robert J. "Rob" Ferreira, 48 years old, died in Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, on Wednesday, June 17, 2009.  Rob was stricken ill at his home on Sunday and was air lifted to Boston on Sunday from Morton Hospital.   He was surrounded by his mother and siblings at the time of his death.  Born in Taunton, son of Lorraine (Belanger) Ferreira of Dighton and the late Edward Ferreira.  He was a 1979 graduate of Dighton-Rehoboth High School.  Rob lived and worked for a period of time in Florida.  He was employed as a carpenter by Walter Koss Company in Taunton and he also formerly worked as a cement worker in the Taunton area.  He was a member of St Nicholas of Myra Church in Dighton.  One of Rob’s enjoyments was writing poetry and he liked going fishing.  Besides his mother, he is survived by his sisters and brothers; Catherine Leite and her husband Peter of North Dighton, Judy Schnettler and her husband Steve of Michigan, Michael Ferreira of North Dighton, Richard Ferreira and his wife Claire of Dighton and Steven Ferreira of North Dighton.  He is the uncle of Carla Leite, Janeka Ferreira, Courtney, Samantha and Kasey Schnettler, Lindsey and Hayley Ferreira and he is the great uncle of Jayda Johnson.  Relatives and friends are invited to attend Visiting Hours in the Crapo-Hathaway Funeral Home, 350 Somerset Ave, (Route 138 South) Taunton on Saturday June 20, 2009 from 1-4 PM.  Interment services will be private at the convenience of the family. Silvia, she resided at Wampanoag Rd. in Taunton. Born in Taunton, she was the daughter of the late Frank A. and Marie E. (Vargas) Thomas. Educated in Taunton schools, she was a 1942 graduate of Taunton High School. Mrs. Silvia was employed as a clubhouse hostess for the Taunton & Raynham Dog Track for many years, before retiring in 1981. She was a member of Women on Wheels, and the National Greyhound Association. Survivors include 5 sons, Kevin L. Rae of Needville, TX, Harry M. Rae of Alligator Alley, FL, James E. Born in Fairhaven, the daughter of the late Seraphine Philip Jason and the late Helen (Logan) Jason, she lived most of her life in the town. She is survived by her husband; a son, Scott Santos and his wife, Lisa of Fairhaven; grandchildren, Marina, Logan, Alex and Joseph Santos and their mother, Suzanne Souza of West Virginia and Matthew DeSimas of Fairhaven; a brother, Chester Jason and his wife, Lee of Fairhaven; and a sister-in-law, Pauline Carvalho and her husband, Arthur of New Bedford. Barbara was the sister of the late Norma Woods, Philip Jason, Thelma Cordeiro and Logan Jason. She was a partner with her late husband in Herb Santos Real Estate, a clerk in the Fairhaven School system and a first grade teacher's aide in the New Bedford School system. She and her late husband were Charter members of the Mid-Town Twirlers square dance club and she was a member of the YWCA where she enjoyed swimming and water aerobics. Barbara was the Past President of the Fairhaven School Secretaries and the Fairhaven Colonial Club. She served on the boards of the Fairhaven Historical Commission, the Fairhaven Historical Society, the Fairhaven Colonial Club, the Greater New Bedford Garden Club and the Bradford Russell Home. She was also a member of the Fairhaven Improvement Society, the Center Church United Methodist Women's Society and the American Legion Auxiliary Post 166 of Fairhaven. In keeping with her memory go out to lunch with friends. Stewart, Thomas W.

HALIFAX Thomas W. Stewart, 83, of Halifax, passed from this life on Tuesday, June 9, 2009. He was born on November 30, 1925 in Boston to John and Euphemia Stewart, both immigrants of Scotland. Raised in Cambridge, he enlisted in the U.S. Army in early 1942 at 16 years of age. He served with Troop F of the 12th Calvary Regiment and was stationed along the Texas-Mexican Border before being sent to Australia to re-train as a Rifleman in the Infantry. Serving in World War II, he took part as a Rifleman in the campaigns against Japanese invaders in New Guinea, the Bismarck Archipelago, the Philippine Islands of Leyte and Luzon and the Occupation of Japan. He was awarded the following Decorations: The Bronze Star, The Purple Heart and The Combat Infantry Badge and with the following Campaign Medals: Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with four battle stars and an arrowhead, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with three battle stars, Army of Occupation Medal with the Japan Clasp and the Victory Medal. The Army unit he was with made the Beach-head landing on Leyte in the Philippine Islands and the Unit was chosen to re-take Manila on the island of Luzon by General Douglas MacArthur. Later, General MacArthur chose this Army Unit to be the first American Troops to enter Tokyo, Japan while the General was signing the Articles of Surrender by the Japanese aboard the Battleship "Missouri" in Tokyo Bay. The Army Unit was awarded the following: U.S. Presidential Unit Citation and the Philippine Presidential Unit Citation. After World War II, he attended a school for electronics and for 45 years was employed as an Electronic Technician. During his employment with the Bose Corporation, he provided hands-on support in the development of the Maverick Headphone Program, the first two of which were used by the two person crew that flew around the world non-stop. One headset is now with the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. Prior to Bose, he was employed with the the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, as a civilian with the United States Air Force and by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was a Silver Member of the United States Naval Institute, former State Representative of the U.S. Horse Cavalry Association and a Life member of the Disabled American Veterans. Husband of the late Evelyn Coombes Stewart, he is survived by 5 children, including Thomas W. Stewart, Jr. of PA, Susan J. (Stewart) Bernard of PA, Ann L. Stewart of MA and Karen L. Stewart of NH. He leaves behind 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Funeral will be held on Monday, June 22 at 10 a.m. at Mayflower Congregational Church, Kingston. Norma was born in Worcester, September 28, 1928, the daughter of the late Charles K. Andrews, Sr. and Vera (Hultman) Andrews and has lived here all her life. Norma worked over 33 years as an administrator for the New England Power Company, before retiring in 1993. Norma was a member of Lakeview Congregational church. She was a lifelong figure skater and member of the figure skating club of Worcester. She instructed individuals in figure skating well into her 60's. Norma also enjoyed golf and travel. Funeral services for Norma will be held Monday, June 22nd at 11:00 a.m. in Lakeview Congregational church, 115 Coburn Ave. Burial will follow next to her husband in Rural Cemetery. Friends and relatives are invited to visit with the family Sunday, June 21st from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lake View Congregational church, 115 Coburn Ave., Worcester 01604.

Mr. Canty was a graduate of North Quincy High School and Wentworth Institute with a trade degree. Thomas earned his Bachelors and Masters Degree from Boston State College. Thomas was employed Scott & Duggan in Boston working as a Union Carpenter for 30 years before retiring in 1990. He taught wood working in Boston Public Schools for many years. Thomas enjoyed wintering in Port Charlotte, FL. Thomas took pride in being a competitive ballroom dancer. WWII U.S. Navy Veteran. NEW BEDFORD —Esther V. Torres, 71, of New Bedford, died June 17, 2009, at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness. Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Manuel and Bertha (Mickelson) Swaye, she lived in New Bedford all of her life. She was formerly employed as a teachers assistant at the Kennedy-Donovan Center for several years until retirement. She enjoyed knitting, reading, watching the Boston Red Sox and the company of her pets, Simon and "Shebee." Survivors include her daughter, Marsha Torres of New Bedford; her longtime companion, Charles Jardin of New Bedford; a sister-in-law, Thelma Swaye of New Bedford; a niece, Cathy Carlisle and her husband, James of New Bedford; a nephew, Stephen Swaye and his wife, Pamela of New Bedford; 2 great-nephews, Joshua and Benjamin and a great-niece, Katie; a special nephew, Tim Jardin of New Jersey.
