Hanabury Sr., Ralph A.

HANABURY, Ralph A. Sr. "Papa" Of Melrose, Nov. 15, 2008. 85 years of age. Beloved husband of the late Ethel L. (Holmes) Hannabury died at home surrounded by his beloved family; daughter Jane Lavender & her husband James of Melrose, grandchildren Alison (Lavender) Fox & her husband Gregory of Bristol, RI, Jaclyn (Lavender) Bird & her husband Brian of Melrose & Jason Lavender of Melrose. He was the cherished great grandfather of Joseph & Anna Fox & Jake & Josh Bird. Also dear "father" to his beloved Serah Ngwa & her family of Chelsea, MA & dear loving friend of Regina Ngegong. Born on November 29, 1922 in Chelsea to the late Edward & Anna (Stevens) Hannabury, Papa was raised in Chelsea & his early childhood years were like most other families during the depression. During his high school years, the talk of war began. After graduating as Valedictorian in 1940 from Boston Trade School, he went to work in the Boston Navy Shipyard, as there was talk of leasing ships to England to help in their war effort. Shortly after his two brothers joined the infantry, Papa enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942 and became an aerial gunner on a B-17 Flying Fortress. He served proudly in the 8th Air Force 401st Bomb Group & flew thirty-five successful missions. He was wounded in one mission and received a Purple Heart. He was credited with shooting down an enemy plane. He received a Distinguished Flying Cross, five Air Medals, a Purple Heart, several theater decorations and the Presidential Unit Citation. Mr. Hannabury retired in 1988 as a division manager in charge of labor arbitration for the New England Telephone Co. In his retirement he served as Chairman of the Melrose Personnel Board & as an independent arbitrator. After retirement and the passing of his beloved wife, papa lived with his daughter Jane & her husband Jim, his grandson Jason, his dear friends Serah & Regina & the many visitors each day. Papa cherished the busy household & loved spending holidays, birthdays & other celebrations with family & friends. His thoughtfulness & caring attitude kept him busy & happy-whether it was cutting out newspaper clippings he thought people would enjoy, planting in the garden, walking the dogs, making chicken sandwiches, ordering from catalogues or running errands to the post office, bank, dry cleaners or grocery store. He truly put everyone else first & would not hesitate if there was anything he could do to help. He was Papa not only to his grandson, but also to all his grandson's friends and loved to see the "gang" before Red Sox games. Papa's great love for life was apparent each day when he began to fall asleep in his chair every night, but refusing to go to bed because of his desire to stay up & not miss a beat. Caring brother-in-law to Doris Hannabury of Melrose & Carol Hannabury of Andover. Also survived by his son Ralph A. Hannabury, Jr. & his wife Mary of Boston & their family. Kenney, Sister Genevieve

Sister Genevieve Kenney, SSMN Sister of St. Mary of Namur for 69 years BUFFALO, New York Sister Genevieve Kenney, S.S.M.N., born Margaret M. Kenney in Lowell, Massachusetts, died Friday, November 14, 2008, in the Marycrest Residence of the Sisters of St. Mary of Namur, Buffalo, New York. She was 86 years old. Sr. Genevieve began her career as a teacher and worked in a number of schools in New York:St. John the Baptist and Mt. St. Mary Grammar School in Kenmore, Our Lady of Lourdes and Holy Spirit in Buffalo, St. Patrick in Lockport, and St. Mary in Binghamton. It was in Binghamton that Sister moved from school teaching to what was then called the CCD program, working with children whose religious education had to be accomplished outside of the regular classroom. She was the Director of Religious Education in a number of parishes in Binghamton, Buffalo, Pendleton, Kenmore, South Carolina, and even her hometown of Lowell, MA. It was in Syracuse that Sister had the biggest impact on Catholic religious education when she got the ball rolling for increased lay participation in the field in 1966. She was the first regional director of religious education and wondered if lay people might be interested in a training program. The response to that wonder was amazing. Many people in that diocese have now completed a master's program in religious education. Bishop O'Keefe said to his teachers, "You enable me to fill one of my primary roles as a bishop the role of teacher." With all of her accomplishments, Sr. Genevieve is remembered more for what she was than for what she achieved. Her primary gift was gentleness and she was an outstanding peacemaker. Unassertive as she was, she did not hesitate to step into any situation of conflict, reminding all that "We are here for Jesus." In her quiet, simple way she placed herself beside Gandhi and Martin Luther King. What gave her joy was music. At one time in her life, she took music lessons, and song was a gift she offered every ministry, whether it was directing a children's choir or singing herself. In her later years, she still sang wherever she was in her room, in a car, with the other sisters. She was the daughter of the late Hazel and Leo Kenney, and sister of the late Raymond Kenney, John Kenney, Patricia Conley, and Constance Dempsey. She is survived by two sisters, Ann (Ted) Decker of Lowell, MA, and Mary Hutton of Lawrence, MA; many nieces and nephews; and her sisters in the community of the Sisters of St. Mary of Namur. KENNEY Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass on Saturday, November 22, 2008 at 10 AM at the Holy Family Parish Center Chapel, 122 Andrews St., Lowell (the former Sacred Heart School, corner of Moore St. & Andrews St., Lowell). Local arrangements by the Fay McCabe Funeral Home, 978-459-9222.
