Woman saved from sinking

Monday, December 8, 2008 6:26 PM - Ashley Lopes, Staff Writer

Polly Donovan was cold, wet and scared. Her pick-up truck had just veered off a slick road and into a pond near Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School. But, luckily, Donovan wasn’t harmed — thanks to the advice of a police dispatcher. The Taunton woman, 37, escaped unharmed from a frightening situation Sunday by climbing onto the top of her truck and waiting for rescuers after she lost control of the vehicle and slid into a pond about 6 feet off Regional Road just before noon. As her pick-up began to sink in the water, Donovan, of 102 Davenport St., called 911 on her cell phone and spoke with a police dispatcher.   The dispatcher instructed Donovan to roll down her driver’s side window, climb into the water and onto the roof of her sinking vehicle, where she awaited rescuers. Dighton patrolman Ron Duquet, the first to arrive on the scene, found Donovan sitting on top of her vehicle, which was nearly submerged in the water, and still on the phone with the dispatcher. “She was hysterical,” Duquet said. However, he commended the dispatcher for a job well done keeping Donovan calm enough to listen to her instructions and climb to safety. Rehoboth Police Sgt. James Medeiros soon arrived to assist Duquet. The Rehoboth officer threw Donovan his lifeline, she tied the rope around her and officers pulled her an estimated 15 to 20 feet through the water to safety. Dighton Police Sgt. David McGuirk and Dighton fire personnel also joined in the effort upon arrival. “She was very cold, but there were no injuries,”  Duquet said. Due to the threat of hypothermia, Donovan was checked by medical personnel on scene but refused medical treatment.  Duquet said Donovan was given a coat and gloves to warm up, and police brought her to get dry clothes at her sister’s house, located near the scene. After seeing the relatively small pond, which was an estimated 8 feet deep, Duquet said he was surprised to learn it could swallow a truck of Donovan’s size. “When we were pulling the truck in, it completely disappeared and submerged at one point,” Duquet said. “And it was a big truck.” While police believe that icy weather conditions were a factor in the incident, they may not have been the sole cause, said Dighton patrolman Ron Duquet. The driver admitted that she had been reaching for her pocketbook at the time of the accident. Duquet said Donovan was issued a citation for negligent operation of a motor vehicle and a marked lanes violation. alopes@tauntongazette.com
