Amie Nicole (Arnold) Martin, wife of William H. Martin, Jr, of Taunton died unexpectedly at the home of her mother on Sunday afternoon.  Born in Taunton on March 17, 1982, she was the daughter of Mary Espinoza, Dennis and Cathy Bartel  and step daughter of James Burch all of Taunton.  Amie was employed as an accounts receivable clerk by Keystone Automotive in Taunton and she also had been a waitress for Ruby Tuesday’s.  She attended St Andrew the Great Church. She enjoyed working out and visiting the gym.  Besides her husband William of Taunton and her parents she is survived by her children Caiden, Connor and Brynna.  She is the granddaughter of Mary Arnold, Peter and Shirley Lawrence, Joseph Batel, Sr all of Taunton and the late Sandra Bartel and the late Richard Arnold.   Amie is the sister of Rachael and Robert Espinoza, Heather, Leah and Kaytie Tokarz; Brooke Burch; Layne, Cullen and Cierra Bartel all of Taunton.  She is also survived by several Aunts, Uncles and Cousins.  Amie is the daughter in law of Donna and David Roy of Waterford, VT and the sister in law of Crystal, Tasha and Joshua Martin.  Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial in St Andrew the Great Church, (Tremont St. facility) on Saturday Dec. 13. 2008 at 10 AM.  Visiting hours on Friday from 5-8PM in the Crapo-Hathaway Funeral Home, 350 Somerset Ave. ( Route 138 South) Taunton. Jean P. Bernard, 84, of Forest St., died on Thursday, December 11, 2008 at the Clinton Hospital after being stricken ill. He is survived by his beloved wife of sixty two years, Loretta (Dubois) Bernard; three sons, Gerard P. Bernard and his wife Jessie of Jaffrey, NH; Fred J. Bernard and his wife Suzanne of Fitchburg; and Edward R. Bernard and his wife Rhonda of Clinton; five daughters, Jeannette Jatrinski and her husband Ronald of FL; Madeleine Wheeler and her husband Brian of Gardner; Ann Hughes also of Gardner; Adele Doyle and her husband Robert of Clinton; and Cecile Patricks and her husband Ronald of FL. He leaves twenty five grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, a daughter-in-law Suzanne Bernard of Winchendon; two brothers-in-law, Robert Chaisson of Wells, ME; and Richard Dubois of Rumford, ME; numerous nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his son, Raymond Bernard, son-in-law, Barry Hughes, eleven brothers and sisters, Roger, Roland, Emile, Joseph, and Ferdinand Bernard, Jane Angers, Juliette Doiron, Rose Leblanc, Lucy Tardiff, Monique Chaisson, and Blanche Bernard, and two grandchildren, Philip and Kimberly Bernard. Jean was born in Limerick, Maine to the late Octave and Marie (Angers) Bernard, and was raised in Springvale. He attended local schools and began employment at a young age as a welder in the Portland Ship Yard. He proudly enlisted to serve our country in the Army Air Corps during WWII, and was stationed in the South Pacific. Upon his return, Jean began employment with the Sanford Mills in Maine, prior to relocating his family to Clinton in 1954. He worked at the former Colonial Press in Clinton for more than twenty years until its closing. Later he was employed in maintenance for the Lancaster School System, before ultimately retiring from the same position held at Ft. Devens. Jean was a parishioner of St. John the Evangelist Church in Clinton. He was a dedicated member and Past Commander of the Clinton VFW, and held membership with the American Legion Post 50. Funeral services are to be held on Monday, December 15, 2008 from the Philbin-Comeau Funeral Home, 176 Water St., Clinton, with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11AM in St. John the Evangelist Church, 80 Union St., Clinton. MANSFIELD Manuel P. Cunha of Mansfield died Friday December 12 at Caritas Norwood Hospital. He was 83. Mr. Cunha was the loving husband of Maria (Birto) Cunha. Mr. Cunha was born in Cape Verde on Dec. 8, 1925 and worked as a school teacher in Cape Verde for several years. He then worked as a Forman at the Advanced Pleating Co., in Sommerville. Mr. Cunha was an avid guitarist who loved music and spending time with his grandchildren. He lived a happy life. Mr. Cunha had been a resident of Mansfield since 2006 and previously lived in Wareham and Randolph. In addition to his wife, Mr. Cunha is survived by two daughters, Celina OBrien of SC and Cynthia Deltano of Mansfield and two sons, Manuel Teixeira of RI and Albert Teixeira of Bridgewater. Joseph W. DeYoung MIDDLEBORO Joseph William DeYoung, age 18 years, of Middleboro, died suddenly Thursday morning, Dec. 11, 2008, from injuries resulting from a car accident. Born in Brockton, he was a son of Sherri A. (Hathaway) DeYoung of Middleboro and Mark J. DeYoung of Phoenix. He was a senior at Middleboro High School, was to graduate in 2009 and had recently been accepted to U.T.I. Dedham. He will be warm-heartedly remembered as a loving, caring and friendly person. He enjoyed many hobbies and activities, including fishing, hunting, boating, being outdoors, the ocean and spending time in Maine. He was involved in the J.O.A.D. program at Reedy's Archery, Middleboro. He was constructing a stone wall with his close friend, Brian McMahon, which was almost to its completion. He is survived by his mother and stepfather, David Young, both of Middleboro; his father and stepmother, Rina DeYoung, both of Phoenix; maternal grandparents, Gordon R. Robert S. Johnson HINGHAM Robert S. "Bob" Johnson, of Hingham, age 65 , passed away on Thursday, December 11, 2008, after a brief battle with cancer. Bob fought this disease in the same way he lived his life - with optimism, hard work, and good humor, and with the family he cherished by his side. The son of the late Burton M. and Barbara (Swig) Johnson. Bob was born and raised in Newton, MA, five houses away from his high school sweetheart and future wife of 42 years, Karen (Stone). He graduated from Newton High and received both his Undergraduate and Masters degrees from Tufts University. He spent seven years as a social studies teacher in Newton before starting Century Mailing Company, a direct mail processing firm, with his father and brother, Donald. All three of Bob's children later joined the family business, which he owned and operated for thirty-five years. Bob was the quintessential family man. His wife, children, and grandchildren were his true passions in life. He also found great joy in contributing to the Hingham community; a longtime resident, Bob was a member of multiple PTO boards and coached countless youth athletic teams. Bob will be dearly missed by his loving family, his devoted wife Karen, his loving children, Richard Johnson and his wife Mindy; Nancy (Johnson) Holtschlag and her husband Michael; and Deborah Johnson, all of Hingham. In Raynham, December 11, 2008 Joseph F. died after a lengthy illness at Life Care Center in Raynham at the age of 81. He was the husband of the late Helen (Reis) Deane. Born in Taunton and educated in Taunton (Taunton High), Joseph was the son of the late Ralph M. and Elsie E. (Savoy) Deane Sr. Joseph resided on Dighton Avenue and was formerly of South Walker Street in Taunton. Joseph was a retired Postal Worker for 38 years in the city of Taunton and for 15 years was the President of local letter carriers union and held all branch offices except treasurer. Joseph was a member of the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans. He also loved to cook, play cards, camp and spend time with his friends at Dunkin’ Donuts on RT 44 (Winthrop St.) in Taunton. Joseph was the father of Deborah “Debi” Sylvia and her husband John of Taunton. Grandfather of Kerry Tolliver and her husband Shawn of Taunton, John “Jay” Sylvia and his wife Torie of Taunton.                                       Of Taunton, died Tuesday December 9th, 2008, at the Morton Hospital after a long illness. He was 80.   Born on January 13, 1928 in Newton, loving son of Yolanda (Nicolazzo) Lupo of Watertown and the late Pasquale Lupo, Mr. Lupo was raised in Newton and lived in Watertown for many years before moving to Taunton over 25 years ago.   Mr. Lupo joined the United States Navy at a young age and served many years and throughout the Korean War.   In his spare time he enjoyed photography, playing cards and grooming pets.   He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years Kazue "Kay" (Hirata) Lupo, his devoted son Dustin M. BRIDGEWATER Ida M. (Picchi) Malinsky, 90, passed away peacefully, at St. Joseph's Manor, Brockton, Dec. 12, after a period of failing health. She was the loving wife of the late Albert J. Malinsky. A daughter of the late John and Luisa Picchi, she was born and raised in Attleboro. She moved to Bridgewater when she married and there she rais-ed her family. Ida was a homemaker, and when her children began school, worked in the shoe and garment industry. When she retired, she became an active member of the Bridgewater Senior Center, where she spent many happy hours with the crafters, the aerobics class and socializing with her many friends. She also truly enjoyed her Sundays with her bingo buddies, playing bingo and laughing the afternoon away. When budget constraints caused limited hours at the Senior Center, she campaigned with other seniors to raise money and awareness to keep the center open. She was also a member of the Bridgewater Golden Agers. She is survived by her devoted children, John A. of Hyde Park, Deborah A. McEnaney and her husband William of West Bridgewater; her beloved grandchildren, Kristen L. Mathena of Brockton and John D. of Taunton; her sister, Anna King of Attleboro; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Teresa Freeman, Angie Scarpellini and Virginia Scarpellini; and by brothers, John, Peter, Armand, Louie and Roxie Picchi. MARTELL, Dorothy Elizabeth "Dodo" Of Laguna Niguel, CA, passed away peacefully on December 12th at the age of 96. She was born in Bangor, Maine on March 23, 1912, to Daniel Patrick Hurley and Winifred (McDonough). Beloved wife of the late Charles R. Martell. Loving mother of Diana (Tim) Clark of Pasadena, CA, Daniel Martell of Chevy Chase, MD, John (Stephanie) Martell of Raleigh, NC, and Charles (Leyla) Martell of Sacramento, CA. She also leaves behind her grandchildren, Pamela (Lee) Armus, John Jr. and Marjorie Martell, Bethany and Carrie Martell, and Ryan and Jennifer Martell. Dorothy has three great-grandchildren. Our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother will be greatly missed. Mary G. (Voci) Williams, 91 years of Taunton, formerly of Brockton, died peacefully December 7, 2008 at home with her family by her side.  She was the beloved wife of the late Arthur A. Williams for 47 years and the daughter of the late Nicola and Emmanuela (Celia) Voci. Born in Philadelphia, Mary moved to Brockton at the age of four; was a graduate of Brockton High School and longtime communicant of St. Margaret Church.   She was the loving mother of Joyce Hayes and her husband Richard of Brockton, Maureen Brillo and her husband Frank of Quincy, Cathy Jackson and her husband James of Bridgewater, Joanne Ferrari and her husband Joseph of Mansfield, Janice Scinta and her husband Louis of West Hartford, Connecticut, and Jeanne Pestana and her husband Thomas of Taunton.  She was the devoted grandmother of Dianne (Hayes) Masel, and Brendan Hayes, Timothy, Jonathan and Caitlin Brillo, Kelly, Kevin and Keith Jackson, Daniel Ferrari, Jenna and Louis Scinta, Jr. and the late Deidre (Hayes) Baril.  She was also the great-grandmother of Austin Masel, Meaghan, Delaney and Maxine Baril, Ryan and Kevin Hayes and Avery and Julia Brillo and sister of Terry Dolan of New Canaan, CT and the late George Voci, Catherine Madan and Nicholas Voci. She recently retired after more than 30 years as Site Manager for Old Colony Elderly Services Meals on Wheels, Manning Towers.  She was also a talented seamstress and taught sewing at the Brockton Evening Adult Enrichment classes at Gilmore School.  She enjoyed painting, embroidery, Bunka and traveling.  Mary had a great sense of humor, and most of all, loved spending time with her family.  She was also a loving and caring mother and grandmother who always put her family first.  She was loved by all and will be dearly missed. In Plymouth, December 7, 2008  Mary M. Tanes died after a brief illness at the age of 78 in Jordan Hospital.  Mary was the daughter of the late Pandy & Helidona (Plakas) Tanes.  Mary was born and educated in Taunton before working for the State Department in Washington, D.C. During her employment Mary traveled numerous times with ambassadors to other countries.  After her retirement in 1987, Mary volunteered at the library in Boynton Beach, FL. where she resided.  She also belonged to the Federal Retirement Group and enjoyed playing bingo.  Recently she moved to MA. when her health had declined.  Mary is predeased by her siblings Violet McGlynn and Ellen Gauthier. She is also survived by several neices & nephews and grand neices & nephews. Mary also leaves several friends from around the country. Brian J. McMahon MIDDLEBORO Brian J. McMahon, age 17 years, of Middleboro, died suddenly Thursday morning, Dec. 11, 2008, from injuries resulting from a car accident. Born in Taunton, he was a son of Joseph A. McMahon of Middleboro and Jeanne McMahon-Powers of Brockton. He was a senior at Middleboro High School and was to graduate in 2009. During the summer, he had worked at Catcher's in Hyannis. He enjoyed many hobbies and activities including, weight lifting, sailing, paintball and loud music. He will be warm-heartedly remembered as a hard worker, loving neighbor. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family. Survivors include both his parents, one brother, Nicholas J. McMahon, serving in Afghan-istan; two sisters, Stephanie A. McMahon of Raynham, Kimberly M. Powers of Lakeville; three nephews, Tyler E. and Cody J. Reynolds and Caden M. Cabral, all of Raynham; his paternal grandmother, Lena McMahon; his maternal grandmother, Linda L. Powers; his great-grandmother, Barbara E. Lakey of Middleboro; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was the grandson of the late Thomas McMahon and Terrance V. Powers. QUINCY Marianne Pfaff, of Quincy, passed away December 10, 2008, at the age of 86. Born and raised in Switzerland, she and her husband, Mario Pfaff, immigrated to the United States in 1947. They made their home in Lexington, MA, where they raised their family and she worked as a librarian at Northeastern Universitys Burlington campus. In 1993, she moved to Boulder, CO, to be close to two of her daughters and the mountains. She spent the last four years of life in Quincy, MA, cared for by her eldest daughter. Mrs. Pfaff, beloved wife of the late Mario Pfaff, and loving mother, leaves her three daughters, Frances Schlesinger of Hingham, MA, Christine Pfaff of Evergreen, CO, and Alice Seigal of Boulder, CO. Emma M. Pizzi WEYMOUTH Emma M. (OFero) Pizzi, died in the presence of her loving family on Wednesday, December 10, at the South Shore Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Weymouth. She was 96 years of age. Born, raised and educated in North Adams, she had lived in Weymouth since 1941. Mrs. Pizzi studied music at the conservatory and was a concert pianist as well as a piano teacher. She enjoyed playing bingo, trips to Foxwoods and was a member of the Weymouth Senior Citizens and the Daughters of Isabella. Beloved wife of the late Albert J. Pizzi, she is survived by her three sons: Dr. Albert L. Pizzi and his wife Patricia (Zeoli) of Hanover, Dr. Samuel E. Pizzi and his wife Alberta (Silevitch) of Venice, FL and Michael C. Catharine Rudnicky retired Leominster Hospital nurse; 85 LEOMINSTER Catharine Rudnicky, 85, died Wednesday (Dec. 10), at Lifecare Center in Leominster, after a long battle with cancer. She was born in Kerny, NJ, on Jan. 17, 1923, the daughter of Leon and Sophie (Kulikowska) Rudnicky. She was a graduate of St. Bernard's High School, and the Leominster Hospital of Nursing, and was a nurse for several years at Leominster Hospital. She also received additional nursing training in the North East Region including Boston and Philadelphia. Her last assignment at Leominster Hospital was in the Cardiac Care Center. Catharine leaves her brother, Peter Rudnicky and his wife, Juliette, of Leominster; one niece, Joanne Cutting of Oxford; 3 nephews, Peter Rudnicky of Pepperell, David Rudnicky of Leominster, and James Rudnicky of Williamsburg, VA. Micheline R. (Zaplotny) Kurowski Sayer, 75, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Friday, December 12th, at her home. Micheline is predeceased by her first husband of 17 years, Chester S. Kurowski, who died in 1969 and her second husband of 28 years, Richard H. Sayer, who died in 2003. She leaves three children: Christina H. M. Ouellet and her husband Jacques of Pinellas Park, FL, and Cynthia M. Iwanski of Dudley; a son, Joseph C. Kurowski and his wife Cheryl of Homosassa, FL; four grandchildren, Michelle Ouellet, Christina Iwanski, Christopher Kurowski and Patrick Ouellet; 4 great grandchildren, Dominic, Ashley, Isabelle and Edison; 6 brothers, Guy, Raymond, Andre, Stanislas, Pierre and Bernard Zaplotny and a sister, Josette Fabisiak, all of France; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her twin sister Jeannine Szczepanski of South Wales, Great Britain, in 1987. She was born in Sermaize-Les-Bains, Marne, France, a daughter of Wladislas and Marie (Grabowska) Zaplotny. She graduated from high school in Vitry-Le-Francois in 1951. She then came to Webster in 1952 and later settled in Dudley in 1964. She graduated from the David Hale Fanning School of Nursing in Worcester in 1971. Mrs. Sayer was a licensed practical nurse at several locations, including Harrington Memorial Hospital in Southbridge from which she retired. In her retirement, she worked part-time at Sunbridge Rehab & Nursing Center in Oxford for a few years. She was a communicant of Saint Andrew Bobola Church. She volunteered for the yearly church festival, running the country store and was once its chairperson. She was a member and past president of the Holy Rosary Sodality at the church. She belonged to the Silver Dippers. She bowled for many years in the Thursday Morning Coffee League at Mohegan Bowl-A-Drome in Webster. She loved to dance, golf, knit, sew, cook and tend her flower garden. She had a compassionate nature and always tried to help people. William Peter Smotherman, 62, of Westborough, died on Wednesday, December 10, 2008 at the UMass Memorial Healthcare- University Campus in Worcester. He was the husband of Maureen Blanche (LaVallee) Smotherman. Born in Elmhurst, Illinois, he was the son of the late William and Margaret (Gerdes) Smotherman. He was educated in Elmhurst schools and graduated from Elmhurst College. He then earned a Ph.D. at Northern Illinois University and a postdoctoral degree at Stanford University. William was a professor, mentor and bio-medical researcher at Oregon State University and at the State University of New York Binghampton. He was distinguished in the field Developmental Psychobiology and acted as Editor-in-Chief of the Developmental Psychobiology journal. William retired at the age of 56 and spent his days with his wife. He was an avid golfer and a member of the Worcester Country Club and had a passion for Fantasy Sports. In addition to his wife he is survived by two sons, Zachary L. Smotherman of Boston and Jordan L. Smotherman of Chicago, Illinois. His entire life was dedicated to the lives of his wife and two sons. He lived and breathed for his family. A memorial service will be held on Monday, December 15, at 1:00 P.M. in St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 27 Main St., Southboro. Burial will be in Elm Lawn Memorial Park, Elmhurst, Illinois. BROCKTON Helena (Saba) Stulpin, 85, formerly of Brockton, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008, in California. She was the wife of the late Raymond Stulpin. Born May 10, 1923, in Brockton, she was a daughter of the late Abdu Saba and Rose (Thomas) Saba. Raised in Brockton, she was a graduate of Brockton High School. Helena worked for Veteran's Affairs Medical Center, in Brockton, for 37 years, until her retirement. She was devoted to her family. Helena is survived by her daughter, Donna Reimels and her husband William of California; her grandchildren, Gregory Reimels and his wife Meghan, Atty. Brian Reimels, John Stulpin and Joseph Stulpin; her great-grandchild, Sophia Reimels; her daughter-in-law, Lynn Stulpin. She was the mother of the late Michael and Raymond Stulpin and the sister of the late Dr. Francis Saba, Louis Saba, Edward Saba, Peter Saba and Catherine Saba Mahoney. Following cremation, a memorial gathering will be held in the Russell & Pica Funeral Home, 165 Belmont St. (Rte. 123), Brockton, Monday, Dec. 15, from 8:30-9:30 a.m., thence to St. Theresa Maronite Catholic Church, 343 North Main St., Brockton, where the service of the divine liturgy will be celebrated at 10 a.m. The Rev. Donald has been a resident of Holbrook for 45 years. He worked as a fabricator at McCusker Sheet Metal Co. in Weymouth. He enjoyed building model ships and planes. Beloved husband of Marjorie J. Weston P. Tracey Jr., age 79, died Wednesday, December 10, 2008, at Saint Vincent Hospital, Worcester. He leaves his wife of 58 years, Anna L. (DeNardis) Tracey of Dudley; three sons, Richard R. Tracey, David T. Tracey and Raymond P. Tracey, all of Webster; 8 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Robert A. Tracey in 2005. He was born in Sheldon, Vermont, son of the late Weston P. Sr. and Olive (Putnam) Tracey, he lived here all his life. Weston was a United States Army Veteran and was a retired security guard. He was a manager in Little League Baseball, was a member of the Webster Police Auxillary and was treasurer for the Sons of Italy Lodge #207. WHEATLAND,Cynthia McAdoo Of Boston, MA and Sorrento, ME, died peacefully in her sleep on December 8th, 2008. She was 82. She was the daughter of the late Molly Tackaberry McAdoo and William Gibbs McAdoo, Jr. of New York and a granddaughter of William Gibbs McAdoo, Secretary of the Treasury in President Wilson's Cabinet. Mrs. Wheatland attended Miss Hewitt's Classes graduating in 1943, and graduated from Barnard College in 1946. Mrs. Wheatland was decorating editor of The Ladies' Home Journal during the 1950s. She also worked with Mrs. Franz Dub as an interior decorator. Mrs. Wheatland married Richard Wheatland II in 1954. Mrs. Wheatland is survived by her husband Richard Wheatland II, a daughter Sally Wheatland Fisher and son-in-law David Fisher, and two grandchildren; Thea and Otto Fisher. She also leaves a sister, Miss Marguerite de H. McAdoo, of New York City. A private family service will be held. Henry Zucchi PLYMOUTH Henry J. Zucchi, of Plymouth, passed away on December 9th at Tufts Medical Center in Boston at the age of 65 after battling cancer. Henry is survived by his beloved wife Donna (Schrettner) of Plymouth and his loving daughter Anne Marie Viola and her husband Matt of NJ. He also leaves his brother Philip Zucchi and his wife Terri of Methuen and his nephew Joseph Zucchi of Methuen. Henry graduated with his BA from UMASS Amherst and received his Master of Arts in teaching from Bridgewater State College. After serving in the U.S. Navy, Henry was an electronics technician for the Apollo Project which was dedicated to landing a man on the moon. Professionally, Henry thoroughly enjoyed his 30 years of teaching 7th grade at Silver Lake Junior High School in Kingston and shared his love of learning with everyone he met. He also was an avid tennis player and enjoyed anything that had to do with electronics, traveling by train and most important to him was spending time with his family. A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, December 16th at St. Peters Church in Plymouth at 10, followed by burial at the Mass. National Cemetery in Bourne.
