Grady, Paul

EAST ORLEANS - Paul Grady could reach out his hand and chickadees would land and feed. He had the same effect on people. For 82 years he touched friends and family with love, humor and warmth. After a heroic battle with cancer, Paul Grady of East Orleans and Wallingford, Conn., died on Aug 14, 2007.

Raised in Cranston, R.I., Mr. Grady graduated from Cranston High School and joined the Army in 1943. An expert rifleman and marine engine mechanic, he fought in many of the major campaigns of World War II, from Normandy and Belgium to Holland. A recipient of two Purple Hearts and several other awards, he rarely spoke of his experience. His son, Dana Grady said, ''He was very humble. He rarely talked about all he had done.”

Mr. Grady loved the outdoors. A passionate and accomplished waterman, Mr. Grady spent much of his life on boats. As a young man, he raked sea moss in Quincy Harbor from a Dyer Dink, the same kind of boat he later would find at a yard sale and renovate. He sailed in some of the most challenging races in New England, including the Marblehead to Halifax and Boston to Bermuda races. He was a member of the Orleans Yacht Club. Until his final days, he was catching bass and tuna off the coast of Cape Cod.

An accomplished skier, he was a founding member of the Old Colony Ski Club and a member of the National Ski Patrol. Several times he skied Tuckerman's Ravine on Mt. Washington. An avid bird watcher, he rarely went anywhere without a pair of binoculars.

Mr. Grady found the greatest pleasure in the simplest things; he marveled at the morning sunrise, the sound of a screaming fishing reel, and the soaring of a hawk. An early riser, the best part of his day was spent over coffee with his morning cohorts, sharing stories, telling jokes and creating laughter, solving the problems of the world.

A salesman for the Baker Company in Sanford, Maine, for three decades, Mr. Grady ran trade shows across the nation. His son, Paul Grady Jr., said, ''He was very proud of his work for Baker, and everywhere he went, he made friends. He had a joke or a smile for everyone.”

Mr.Grady is survived by his wife, Jean; his sons, Dana and Paul Jr.; his daughter, Pam; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was a parishioner of St. Joan of Arc Church. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated in St. Joan of Arc Church, Orleans, on Saturday, Aug. 18, at 10 a.m., with burial to follow in Orleans Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held in the Nickerson Funeral Home, 77 Eldredge Parkway, Orleans, on Friday, Aug. 17, from 5 to 8 p.m.
