LUNENBURG -- Roger G. Gilchrest, 77, of 193 Mulpus Road, entered into the joy of the Lord Saturday, August 18, surrounded by his loving family and friends.
Roger was born Oct. 11, 1929, in Fitchburg, son of Alfred C. and Mary (Rolfe) Gilchrest. He was a 1948 graduate of Lunenburg High School, where he was the treasurer.
Mr. Gilchrest retired from the James River Co. of Fitchburg, working there for 38.5 years. Roger was a registered scouter with the Boy Scouts of America for 31 years, serving as a cub master in Lunenburg, scout master of Troop 9 in Fitchburg and assistant scout master of Troop 1 in Lunenburg.
He was active with the Royal Ranger Ministry for 14 years and active in the Assembly of God Churches, serving as a superintendent and secretary.
He was a charter member of the Lunenburg Town Band, where he had been a member since 1945 and manager since 1964. He had been a member of the Townsend Military Band for 31 years. He was also a member of the Ayer Firemans Band, Westminster Town Band and the American Legion Post 10 Band.
He was an honorary member and former president of the Frontiersman Camping Fellowship. He was a former member of the Lunenburg Fire Department, where he had served for 23 years and had been secretary.
He was a member of the Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship, where he had been secretary and vice president; a member of Youth For Christ International, where he had served as treasurer of the Montachusett Chapter; secretary and vice president of the Lunenburg Historical Society; a member of the Lunenburg Conservation Commission from 1991 until 2000 and chairman of the Lunenburg Town Forest Committee; and a member of Promises Keepers.
He belonged to the Sons of Union Veterans of Civil War and was charter member of the Civil War Round Table, North Worcester County. In 2006, he was presented the Community Service Award.
He leaves his wife of 56 years, Elizabeth “Betty” (Marchant) Gilchrest; two sons, Gary P. Gilchrest and his wife, Gwenn, of Gardner and Peter C. Gilchrest and his wife, Tira, of Lunenburg; one daughter, Pamela Barton, and her husband, Kevin, of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; two sisters, Mary Jane Smith of Clinton and Susan Gilchrest of Tucson Ariz.; eight grandchildren, Rebecca, Serena, Benjamin, William, Russell, Eric, John and Olivia; nine great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
GILCHREST -- A funeral service will be held Wednesday, August 22, at 10 a.m. in the Crossroads Community Church- Fitchburg Assembly of God, 839 Ashby State Road, Fitchburg. Burial will be in South Cemetery, Lunenburg. Calling hours will be held Tuesday evening from 5:30-9:00 p.m. in the church. In lieu of flowers, donations in Roger’s memory may be made to: Royal Ranger Scouting Program, 18 McIntosh Road, Chelmsford, MA 01824. Aubuchon-Moorcroft Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
