Helen I. Brems

EAST BOSTON - Helen I. Brems, a lifelong resident of East Boston, died Friday, Aug. 10, 2007, at Oak Knoll Health Care Center of Framingham.

She was the wife of Joseph F. Brems, who died in November 1950.

Born and raised in East Boston, daughter of the late Egidio "Michael" and Amelia (Repucci) Galluccio, she was a graduate of East Boston High School, Class of 1947.

For more than 25 years, she worked at Boston University School of Medicine, attaining the position of administrative manager in the educational media support center.

During her tenure she was instrumental in the production of medical educational materials including numerous medical textbooks. Under her management, the department was widely recognized and was the model for other medical training departments, locally and abroad. She retired in 1994.

As matriarch, organizer and heart of many family functions, nothing in her life surpassed her love for family. She loved to have a good time and shared her warmth and humor with all who were privileged to know her.

She leaves her children, Steven J. Brems and his wife, Dolores of Bonita Springs, Fla., and Joette H. Brems and her partner, Debra S. Johnson of Framingham; her siblings, Edward E. Galluccio and Caroline C. Debasitis, both of East Boston, Marilyn R. Debasitis and her husband, Leon, of Amesbury, and Michael C. Galluccio and his wife, Janet, of Wickford, R.I.; her nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

She was the sister of the late Josephine C. Uga and Gabriel A. "Lou" Galluccio, and aunt of the late Paul R. Uga.

A memorial funeral Mass will be held Friday, Aug. 31, at 11 a.m., at the Church of the Sacred Heart, 35 Brooks St., East Boston.

Mary M. Budreau

WORCESTER - Mary M. Budreau, 62, of Worcester, died Thursday, Aug. 16, 2007, at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester after a long illness.

Born and raised in Framingham, daughter of the late Frederick and Margaret G. (Cotter) Budreau, she attended St. Stephen's School and Marian High School in Framingham.

She worked for the former Jordan Marsh Co. before moving to Worcester, where she lived for the past 30 years. She enjoyed many close friendships during her years there, but her happiest moments were when she was with her family.

She loved spending time with her nieces and nephews - her room was filled with their pictures - and it gave her the greatest pleasure to buy them presents and hear how much they enjoyed them.

A loving, caring aunt, sister and daughter every day of her life, even when her health was deteriorating, she continued to be concerned about everyone else and never complained.

She leaves her sister, Marlene F. Chaplin of Framingham; a niece, Donna Barry and her husband, Michael, of Holliston; and a grandniece and grandnephew, Colleen and Sean Barry of Holliston.

She was the aunt of the late Christine and Paula Chaplin.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, Aug. 24, at 10 a.m., at St. Stephen's Church, 251 Concord St., Framingham.

Burial will follow in St. Stephen's Cemetery in Framingham.

Visitation will take place Friday, Aug. 24, from 8:45 to 9:45 a.m., at the Eugene J. McCarthy and Sons Funeral Home, 11 Lincoln St., Framingham.

Rosemary F. Del Vecchio

HOLLISTON - Rosemary Francis (Shea) Del Vecchio, 76, formerly of Natick, died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2007, at the home of her daughter in Holliston.

She was the wife of the late Nicholas A. Del Vecchio for 55 years.

Born in Cambridge, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Rose Shea of Belmont.

Mr. and Mrs. Del Vecchio raised their nine children in Natick, living there for 33 years. She was always surrounded by her family and was devoted to ensuring their happiness.

After raising her children, she returned to study at Framingham State College, using her love for learning and reading to master social studies, politics and history.

Active in St. Linus Parish while living in Natick, she was a CCD teacher for many years and she remained committed to Catholic Charities. She never lost the desire to understand current events as her 26 grandchildren would often speak with her about the news of the day.

She leaves nine children and their spouses, Christine and Kevin Moynihan of Holliston, Marguerite and John O'Neil of Jaffrey, N.H., Elisabeth Jutkiewicz of Miami Beach, Fla., Mark and Ann Del Vecchio of Wellesley, Gail and Michael Jacquet of Holliston, Rosemary (Del Vecchio) and Andreas Horova of Medway, Paul and Lynne Del Vecchio of Medway, John Del Vecchio of Holliston, and Nicholas Del Vecchio of Atlanta; two sisters, Karen Rivers and Kathleen Shea of Belmont; three brothers, Richard Shea of Waltham, and Robert and Charles Shea of Belmont; 26 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will take place Friday, Aug. 24 at 9 a.m., at St. Linus Church, 119 Hartford St., Natick.

Burial will follow in Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge.

Julia F. Donnelly

FRAMINGHAM - Julia F. (Carr) Donnelly, 90, a resident of Framingham since 1949, died Monday, Aug. 20, 2007, at St. Patrick's Manor in Framingham.

She was the wife of Edward "Teddy" Donnelly, who died in 1999.

Born in Ireland, she was the daughter of the late Austin and Katie Carr. Mrs. Donnelly immigrated to Framingham in 1949.

She worked at the former Cushing Hospital in Framingham as a nurse's aide for more than 20 years before her retirement in 1981, and had formerly worked at Framingham State Teacher's College.

She was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and a former member of the Young at Heart at St. Bridget's Church in Framingham.

Mrs. Donnelly leaves three children, Mary C. Cheston and her husband, Richard, of Falls Church, Va., Michael T. Donnelly and his wife, Helen, of Framingham and Ted P. Donnelly and his wife, Lorna, of Franklin; six grandchildren, Julie Donnelly of Framingham, Matthew, Timothy and Andrew Cheston, all of Falls Church, and Jared and Jacob Donnelly, both of Franklin; and her sister, Rachel Mayberry of London.

She was the grandmother of the late Michael James Donnelly and sister of the late Annie E., Michael, Patrick and William Carr, Mary Carty and Lucinda Cronin.

A funeral Mass will be held Saturday, Aug. 25, at 9:30 a.m., at the Chapel of St. Patrick's Manor, 863 Central St., Framingham.

Burial will follow in St. Stephen Cemetery, Framingham.

A time of visitation will take place Saturday, Aug. 25 from 8:30 to 9:20 a.m., prior to the Mass in the chapel.

Eleanor D. Gardner

WAYLAND - Eleanor (Dales) Gardner, 92, died unexpectedly Monday, Aug. 6, 2007, at MetroWest Medical Center in Natick after being stricken at her residence in Wayland.

She was the wife of the late Bertram Wallace Gardner Jr. whom she married Dec. 26, 1941. He died in November 1990.

Born in Eureka, Kansas, the daughter of the late Elwin Wiard Dales and Katherine Green (Favour) Dales, she grew up on a dairy farm. She began her education in a one-room schoolhouse and was a 1932 graduate of Eureka High School. She played the cello, was an accomplished horsewoman and avid tennis player. She attended Washburn College, in Topeka, Kan., and received a bachelor's degree in home economics from Kansas State in 1938.

At Kansas State, she was president of OMICRON NU, which promotes scholarship, leadership and research and is only open to seniors, and participated in College 4-H, was secretary for the Home Economics Club, belonged to the Ionian Society and the YWCA, and was a freshmen counselor. After graduation, she was a home demonstration agent for the Kansas State College Extension Services for three years in Wabaunsee County.

Mr. and Mrs. Gardner moved to Wayland in August 1963 after having lived in Illinois since 1942. She was active in the PTA, the Boy Scouts and Campfire Girls and with the children's choir at the First Congregational Church in LaGrange, Ill.

She was very involved with the Women's Circle Club of both churches in Illinois and the Deborah Circle in Wayland, and spent many dedicated years as a volunteer for the town of Wayland. She was a member of the Trinitarian Congregational Church in Wayland since 1963 and the Ladies Benevolent Association, which is the oldest organization of the church.

Mrs. Gardner used her sewing skills to make quality garments for the less fortunate and personal gift bags for the Women's Seafarers Friend Society. She coordinated the Christmas gift donations from church members to the Parmenter Health Center in Wayland, and participated in the vacation Bible classes and the adult Bible classes of the church.

Tracing her family genealogy she was a life member of the Massachusetts Society of Genealogists and member of New England Historic Genealogical Society. Her diverse hobbies included sewing, cooking, baking and cake decorating, working with leather, as well as designing and crafting enamel jewelry, which she sold at a local store. She also enjoyed all sorts of craft projects and furniture refinishing, and spent hours in her flower garden. She assisted her husband in the editing and illustrating of his many books.

She leaves her children and their spouses, Bertram W. "Bert" III and Kathleen J. Gardner of North Attleborough, and Katherine A. "Kay" Gardner-Westcott and Richard L. Westcott of Wayland; grandchildren, Kimberly A. Aliperti and her husband, Vincent, of Geneva, N.Y., Bertram W. IV and Jamie Gardner of East Hampton and Kimberly Marie Costa-Gardner of North Attleborough; her great-grandchildren, Benjamin Gardner, Sarah Ann and Elizabeth Dales Aliperti, Christianna Bevereley and Allison Kathleen Gardner; and her niece, Katherine Dales and her daughter, Madeline Padgett.

She was the grandmother of the late Andrew Charles and Thomas Ian Westcott and sister of the late Philip F. Dales.

A memorial tea celebrating her life will be held Saturday, Aug. 25, at 1 p.m., with the Rev. James V. Pocock, pastor of the Trinitarian Congregational Church officiating. Her services are being held at Bradford Hall, next to the church due to the current renovations at Trinitarian Congregational Church.

Burial will be at a later date in Carbondale, Kan., the childhood home of her husband.

At her request, there will be no funeral home visitations.

Instead of flowers, her family suggests memorial gifts be made to the Trinitarian Congregational Church, 53 Cochituate Road, Wayland, MA 01778.

Arrangements are under the direction of the John C. Bryant Funeral Home of Wayland.

Sylvian T. 'Lillian' Lakeman

MILFORD - Sylvian T. "Lillian" (Lucca) Lakeman, 90, of Milford, died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2007, at Milford Regional Medical Center.

She was the wife of Leonard G. Lakeman, who died in 1987.

Born in Milford, daughter of the late Antonio and Concetta (Brita) Lucca, she was a lifelong Milford resident and was educated in the Milford schools.

She retired in 1972 from the former Milford Shoe Co. where she was employed as a floor person.

Mrs. Lakeman was a member of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church. She enjoyed the ocean, playing cards and her family. She was a loving mother, sister and grandmother and touched the hearts of those she met.

She leaves a daughter, Donna M. Roberts of Worcester; one brother, Arthur Lucca of Milford; four grandchildren, Thomas J. and Tammy J. Jackson, both of Millbury, and Suzanne L. Thomson and Vickie-Lee N. Roberts, both of Worcester; and six great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by three brothers, Nicholas, Anthony and Michael Lucca, and seven sisters, Mary Pozzoli, Celia and Josephine Lucca, Lena Tedeschi, Louise Wilkinson, Helen Kennedy and Eva Gala.

A funeral Mass will be held Friday, Aug. 24, at 10 a.m., at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 7 East Main St., Milford.

Cremation will take place in Rural Cemetery in Worcester.

April J. Lewis

DOUGLAS - April J. (Lavargna) Lewis, 31, died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2007.

She was the wife of Mark E. Lewis, whom she married Sept. 7, 2002.

Born in Van Horn, Texas, daughter of the late Kathleen A. (Burns) and Richard A. Lavargna, she was a resident of Douglas for more than six years, and had lived previously in Milford, Framingham and Texas.

She had been the office manager for Kings Supply Co. of Manchaug since 2004.

Mrs. Lewis loved her family, horseback riding, animals, the outdoors and yard sales.

Besides her husband, she leaves her children, Cheyanne M. Gines and Hannah M. Lewis, both of Douglas; her brother, Richard A. Lavargna Jr. of Fitchburg; her sister, Annette M. Mogle of Hardwick; and nieces and nephews.

The funeral will take place Saturday, Aug. 25, with a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m., at St. Mary's Church, Winter Street, Milford.

Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Milford.

Sobhy E. 'Sib' Mabardy

NATICK - Sobhy E. "Sib" Mabardy, 93, of Natick, died Monday, Aug. 20, 2007, at his Oak Ridge Farm, the same house where he was born.

He was the husband of Yvonne D. (Kabaz) Mabardy, who died in 1996.

A lifelong resident of Natick, he was the son of the late Nicholas and Mary (Shallah) Mabardy.

Mr. Mabardy grew up and worked on Oak Ridge Farm on Rockland Street in Natick. The farm was purchased by his father in 1901, and produced dairy products and vegetables, one of the oldest continuously family owned farms in Massachusetts.

As a young man he would take vegetables for sale to Boston's North End markets, traveling by horse and carriage and beginning his daily journey at 4 a.m.

He later worked for the Myer Goodwin Bus Co. of Natick and as a mechanic and bus driver for the town of Weston.

Those who knew him admired and respected his lifelong work ethic and dedication to providing for his family, earning him the nickname "Buckshot" as he seemed to be working everywhere at once.

In 1969 his opened the Mabardy Gulf Service Station on South Main Street in Natick, which is still operated in the family by his son, Michael, of Natick.

Mr. Mabardy was a member of the Bethesda Lodge of Masons and was formerly a member of the Massachusetts Army National Guard.

He leaves seven children, Mary Ann Petherick and her husband, Robert, of Ashland, Martha Chisholm and her husband, Ronald, of Salem, N.H., Nicholas S. Mabardy and his wife, Ann, of Natick, Jean N. Harrigle and her husband, Father Gregory Harrigle, of New Castle, Pa., Christine (Mabardy) Higgins of Natick, Michael G. Mabardy and his wife, Lisa, of Natick, and Joanne Le Blanc and her husband, Kevin, of Londonderry, N.H.;, 16 grandchildren, Brian and Diana Petherick, Joseph, Gary, David, and Christopher Chisholm, Matthew, Katherine, and Philip Le Blanc, Michael and Nicholas Mabardy, Sophie Yvonne Harrigle, Ethan Mabardy Higgins, Michael Sobhy Mabardy, and Ashley and Alyssa Mabardy; two great-grandchildren, Benjamin and Brody Chisholm; and many nieces and nephews, including the Ghareeb, Mabardy, Rushford, Welch, Hamwey, Tabet and Campbell families.

He was the brother of the late George Mabardy, Lillian Ghareeb and Alice Rushford.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, Aug. 25, at 10 a.m., at St. John of Damascus Orthodox Church, 300 West St. (Rte. 135), Dedham.

Burial will follow in Dell Park Cemetery, Natick.

Jeanne M. Marshall

FRAMINGHAM - Jeanne M. (Cook) Marshall, 81, of Framingham, died Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2007, at her home, surrounded by her family, after a long illness.

She was the wife of John F. Marshall, who died in 1999.

Born in Boston, daughter of the late Ernest and Gertrude (MacGregor) Cook, she was a Framingham resident for more than 50 years. She was employed at Framingham State College until her retirement.

She leaves two sons and their wives, Michael F. and Donna Reardon of Londonderry, N.H., and Kevin P. and Amy Reardon of of Millis, and two daughters, Maureen Kanavich of Framingham and Janet M. Clark and her husband, Roy, of Medway; three sisters, Katherine Silver of Medford, Jeannette Cohen and Marie Alex of Jamaica Plain; eight grandchildren, Sean, Brian, Meghan, Michael and Matthew Reardon, Jonathan Kanavich, and Diana and Amanda Clark; and many nieces and nephews.

She was the sister of the late Ernest, Kenneth and Gerald Cook, Gertrude Coveney and Helen Baker.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, Aug. 25, at 10 a.m., at St. George's Church, 74 School St., Framingham (Saxonville).

Burial will follow in St. Stephen's Cemetery in Framingham.

Carlos A. Portela

FRAMINGHAM - Carlos A. Portela, 64, of Framingham, died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2007, at MetroWest Medical Center, Framingham.

He was the husband of Cecilia (Rodriguez-Kayser) Portela of Framingham.

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he was the son of the late Raul J. and Isabel (Blanco) Portela.

Mr. Portela owned Target Electronics in Framingham for many years.

He was a talented musician, singer and author of lyrics for several songs that delighted his listeners. His innate artistic sensibility produced musical exits, especially in the field of Argentinean folkloric songs. His poetic and musical creations were played in several countries.

Besides his wife, he leaves his sister, Noemi Pedraza and her husband, Evaristo, of Southborough; and two nieces, Isabel and Alison Pedraza.

The funeral will take place Friday, Aug. 24, at 10:30 a.m., at the Norton Funeral Home, 53 Beech St. (corner of Union Avenue), Framingham, followed by a funeral Mass at 11:30 a.m., at St. Stephen Church, 221 Concord St. (Rte. 126) Framingham.

Burial will follow in Rural Cemetery, Southborough.

Visiting hours are today, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

John J. 'Jack' Ryan

MARLBOROUGH - John J. "Jack" Ryan, 78, died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2007, at UMass Medical Center in Worcester after a brief illness.

He was the husband of Mary M. (Healey) Ryan for 54 years.

Born in Boston, son of the late Peter and Maryellen (Lehane) Ryan, he lived in Dorchester and Portland, Maine, before moving to Marlborough in 1963.

He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and was a member of the AMVETS of Hudson.

For many years, he was employed by Fairbanks Co. of Boston, retiring in 1990, and worked also for Bose Corp. and later for Marlborough Hospital.

He was a longtime member of Immaculate Conception Parish, a member of Marlborough Ancient Order of Hibernians, past division president and member of the Middlesex County Board, member of Marlborough Knights of Columbus Council 81, and the McSweeney Assembly 4th Degree Knights.

Mr. Ryan was a longtime active member of the former Dukes of Marlborough drum and bugle corps.

Besides his wife, he leaves six children, Kathleen M. Bodington of Hooksett, N.H., Karen J. Kelly and friend, David Hamilton, and Kevin M. Ryan, all of Marlborough, Maureen L. Cronin and her husband, Arthur, of Norfolk, Bridget Ryan-Tenney and her husband, Chuck, of Kansas City, Mo., and Patrick T. Ryan and his wife, Laurie-Ann of Marlborough; five grandchildren, Justin and Gregory Bodington, Garrick and Nevin Cronin and Matthew Ryan; and several nephews.

He was the father of John P. Ryan, who died in 1991.

The funeral will be held Saturday, Aug. 25, at 10 a.m., at Immaculate Conception Church, 11 Prospect St., Marlborough.

Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Robert T. Sheahan

NATICK - Robert T. Sheahan, 81, of Natick and a former resident of Framingham, died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2007, at Riverbend Nursing Home in South Natick.

Born in Framingham, he was the son of the late Joseph L. and Irene R. (Arnold) Sheahan Sr. and attended Framingham public schools.

He served in the U.S. Navy for 20 years, on active duty during World War II, the Korean and Vietnam Wars, and the Cuban Missile Crisis.

During World War II, he served as a gunner's mate on an ammunition ship that was part of the D-Day invasion. Following his 20 years' service, he was in the Naval Reserves for another 10 years before his retirement in 1974.

After his military service, he worked as an electrician at the former Shopper's World in Framingham and the former Wonder Bread factory in Natick. He was an active member in the American Legion and the Naval Retirement Association.

He leaves his brothers, John R. Sheahan and his wife, Dorothy, of Framingham and Fred T. Sheahan and his wife, Barbara, of Worcester; his nieces and nephews, Jonathan, Mark, Michael and his wife, Beth, and Edward Sheahan, Lisa Szymczak and her husband, Jack, and Linda Talvy and her husband, Charles; and his great-nieces and great-nephews, Charlene and Susan Talvy, and Edward, Emily and Breanna Sheahan and Tyler Koontz.

He was the uncle of the late Stephanie Sheahan Koontz and brother of the late Joseph L. Jr., Francis D., and Mary M. Sheahan.

At the family's request, funeral services will be private at a later date.
